| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2022 | | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2022 | 61 61 Immediately inside the north entrance to the South Clubhouse there is an area reserved for the management and the promotion of the Sun Lakes Tennis Club. Trophies, memorabilia, books on display, photos, a drop box for payments, and, a more recent addition, an framed painting by the late Pala Garden (1929-2018), a former resident and active member of the Tennis Club. Pala Garden was a Southern California artist and sometime poet whose painting majored in watercolors. Given her many accomplishments in the pursuit of her art, the Club was both surprised and honored to receive a signed copy of one of her works not long after her death. The Tennis Club members wish to thank Pala's estate for this highly prized gift. Pala was very likely aware of the verse by Rudyard Kipling posted In the tunnel that leads to famed Wimbledon's Center Court: "If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two impostors just the same." I make this assertion partly because of what Pala wrote as found on the reverse side of the painting: I am basically a self-taught artist. Through trial and triumph I paint what I intuitively feel about color, design, perspective, etc. What I have learned over the years has come from a great deal of reading and listening and watching others. I am engrossed in the creative experience and what pleases me and not necessarily copying someone else's style to please others. Pala's painting is signed, but not titled. However, if I may, a case might be made for giving this work the title, Triumph. It reflects something of the exuberance and pure emotion that Pala wished to give public expression. The mood of this painting is bathed in joyful celebration. Pala clearly had something to say about the sheer pleasure of the game, win or lose. So, once again we say thank you to her estate for making her memory live on in our Club, and in our larger community of Sun Lakes. Now, a Tennis Tip from tennis pro, Phil Hazelton, this time about keeping the correct score when playing doubles. According to Phil, it's best in doubles that the server say the score of the game before they serve the next point. They should say the score loud enough for all to hear. So, if there is an error in the score it can be corrected. Then, remember, keep your eye on the ball and the fun in your game. Tennis
