Larry Smiley, 85, passed away on May 6, 2022. He was born January 14, 1937, in Lebanon, IN and earned a B.A. from DePauw University and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa before embarking on a long and successful career as a collegiate professor and administrator at the University of North Dakota and Central Michigan University. He held many leadership positions within professional associations and served on 92 accreditation teams throughout the world before retiring in 2014. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, the American Association of Higher Education; and was listed in Who's Who in American Education. Larry served in the U.S. Army and spent several years in the business sector before discovering that teaching was his niche in life. He had fond memories serving as an athletic trainer in addition to being a teacher at the high school level. Larry enjoyed his time at Sun Lakes and said moving here for the final seven years of his life was one of the best decisions he ever made. He served on the Master Architectural Committee and was a member of Social Singles, Art League, The Friendship Club, Creative Writers, Paisanos, and Friends of Bocce. It was in the Social Singles group where he met his "best friend" Keiko Fujuii. They enjoyed many events and special occasions together and "looked after" one another. He greatly enjoyed good food, theater, music and musicals, travel and activities in the above-mentioned groups. His artistic flair was shown through his many paintings which he had on display in his house, as well as having several writing endeavors published. One of his most interesting hobbies was construction. He built three houses completely from the ground up, in addition to doing remodeling or additions to several others. He was fortunate to travel throughout the country and world. Some of his favorite destinations were Germany, Italy, Japan and China. Larry never met a puzzle he did not enjoy completing, whether it be a jigsaw puzzle, the daily crossword, sudoku or various others on the comic pages. He was a member of the Catholic church and was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. He attended the Indianapolis 500 numerous times, as both a youth and introducing it to his family later on in life. He found great joy in both snow skiing and general relaxation at Big Sky, MT. John (Jake) Henning was born August 11, 1925 and passed away April 27, 2022. Born in Aberdeen, South Dakota and moved with his family to Southern California at the age of five. He graduated from Van Nuys high school and joined the Navy serving as a submariner in World War Two. After the war he joined the Los Angeles Police Department where he retired after 20 years. He then got a degree in education and taught school for 20 years. His passion was music. He had his own Van Nuys high school band, was a member of Eli's Big Band (played in Sun Lakes many years) and was a member of the Golden Eagles band. He played tenor sax into his 90s. Living in Sun Lakes for 28 years, he made many friends. He loved to travel, enjoyed social events and a glass of Chardonnay. He is survived by his wife Donna, daughter Cecelia Daye and her husband Bob, son Kirk Henning, daughter Jill Boulanger, sister Carol, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be missed by all who knew him. Colonel Patrick Joseph Kahler, USMC Retired, age 79, passed away on June 5, 2022. Born in Boise, Idaho on June 13, 1942, son of Evelyn (Kane) and Walter Kahler. He is preceded in death by his sister Margaret Brackebush. Pat is survived by his wife of 56 years Ginger (Reynolds), his two children Patrick (wife Patricia) and Michael, and his four grandchildren, Mikahela, Aleksandra, Xavier, and Nikolas. Pat was raised in Mackay Idaho and graduated from Mackay High School. He attended and graduated from the University of Idaho where he was commissioned as a United States Marine Corps officer. On the same day he became engaged and was married in September of 1965. He served three tours in Vietnam where he was awarded both a bronze and silver star for valor. His story can be found in the book Young Blood, A History of the 1st Battalion 27th Marines. After retiring from 30 years in the Marine Corps, Pat worked as the Director of CASA in North Idaho, Coordinator of Student Job Training in Spokane Washington, and as a Substitute teacher in San Bernardino. Pat and his wife have been residents of Sun Lakes for the last 20 years where he has been in the Marine Corps Club, a District EPAP coordinator, volunteered with Alzheimer's patients, and helped stock books in the Library.
