Our Community Awareness Program is focused on keeping our community safe and to notify the proper authorities to resolve issues. We want to stay vigilant, keep an eye on our community and provide presentations to keep you informed. At our May meeting we had John McLaughlin from the San Gorgonio Pass Historical Society give a presentation on REMEMBERING OUR TOWN. We also had Art Vela who is the Public Works Director with the City of Banning. Art gave a presentation on the water crisis and the chromium 6 problem. Lt. Roman with Securitas gave a brief talk on issues happening in Sun Lakes and how to avoid them. Cpl. Nottingham with the Banning Police Department spoke on issues facing our community. He explained concerns about the homeless situation and what the police can do. He gave information regarding arrests and what happens when they do make an arrest. PROGRAM FOR JULY: The date is July 28 from 1 to 3 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. The presentation will be by Senior Director of Public Affairs, Lupe Valdez from Union Pacific Railroad. Ms. Valdez covers the areas of Southern California, Southern Nevada and Arizona. This will be a very informative presentation regarding our railroads and issues facing our community. Please make time to attend. Securitas is again starting the garage door checks from 8 pm to midnight. Please be mindful to close your garage doors at night. In walking my own District 17 plus District 16, I have noticed that the trash cans are overflowing. Some of the homes don't even have the right trash in the correct trash cans. Your trash cans MUST be closed all the way. Break down any cardboard boxes and put in the recycle can. Also NO Styrofoam or plastics in the recycle can. Please see my last article in June's Lifestyles regarding what goes in each container. I have heard that Waste Management is now starting to issue citations. Let's all do our part with good recycling habits. BE COYOTE AWARE! Don't feed coyotes. Remove attractants, pick up trash, secure garbage, feed pets inside, and don't leave food or pets outside at night. Walk dogs on leashes, especially during pup rearing season (April-August). Pick up your small dog if you see a coyote and don't let pets roam. If approached, don't run. Wave arms, make noise and walk toward the coyote until he retreats. Be, "Big, Bad and Loud." Avoid areas where coyotes may be denning or feeding/ hiding pups. Appreciate coyotes from a distance. Information from: ProjectCoyote.Org SAFETY AND SECURITY PRVENTION TIPS: Lock your doors! Of course, you know you should lock your exterior doors at night. But, you may want to consider locking interior doors as well as an extra security precaution. If there is a door leading into the bedroom quarter of your house, this should be locked at night. SPARE KEYS! It's essential to have a spare key for your house. Rather than hiding it under a doormat or a potted plant, leave it with a trusted friend or neighbor. Burglars and potential thieves know to look for a spare key around your doors! SECURING YOUR HOME FROM THE OUTSIDE! Make sure your outdoor areas are well lit. This will keep potential criminals at bay. It indicates people are at home, and makes suspicious activity clearly visible to you and your neighbors. OWN A FIREPROOF SAFE! Invest in a safe to store your valuables. Purchase a fire-proof safe that is bolted to the wall or floor so that burglars can't simply remove the entire safe from your home. POWER OUTAGES? BE PREPARED! Criminals strike when opportunity presents itself. If you experience power outages in your area, make sure you lock all your doors to the outside. Be wary of electronic protection that may cease to function when the electricity is cut off. Just as a reminder, you may install motion sensor light bulbs in your existing fixtures. They work in overhead patio lights or outside doorways. These particular motion sensor light bulbs do not require the approval by the Master Architectural Committee. Please see the article from the Master Architectural Committee report in the May Lifestyles. If anyone is interested in becoming part of our steering committee, our next meeting will be on June 30 at 4 pm at the North Clubhouse. Hope to see everyone on July 28. Let's all be informed and stay safe.
