"Gardening is cheaper than therapy, and you get tomatoes." ~ Author unknown Did you get out to enjoy the Garden Club's bi-annual Garden Tour? June 4 was a perfect day for garden hopping. There were 10 gardens to enjoy and inspire us. A big thank you to all who made it possible. At any time when you were out and about in Sun Lakes, you may have noticed one of the four beautiful new benches that the Garden Club has contributed to the community. One with the image of a tree is in front of the Main Clubhouse, one with a golfer on it is at the putting green across from the Sandwedge, another with a hummingbird inset is in front of the South Clubhouse, and the fourth with a bicycle image is in front of the North Clubhouse. At our monthly June meeting, we enjoyed hearing from Carol Mahre, the program director for the Lavender Fields at Highland Spring Resort and Inn. Several new gardens are planned and some are available for viewing now. Of special interest is "The Mojave Indigenous Garden" honoring the Cahuilla Indians — the first people to develop the area. We heard about the native plants that were used for food and medicines. Great news — the Lavender Festival will continue through July. July promises to be another activity-packed month in Sun Lakes. Starting off with a bang, we have the Fourth of July celebration which includes the Golf Cart Parade. The theme this year is "America — Red, White, and Blue." The Garden Club was busy through June creating our golf cart entry. Watch for blooming flowers! We're looking forward to the Garden Club's July 13 meeting at which Betty Warnell will be speaking. Many of you may remember the delightful presentation that she treated us to several years ago. Yup, she's still doing lots of organic vegetable gardening with a one-acre plot in Hemet and a garden at her home in Cherry Valley. Several of our members get fresh veggies at her produce stand on Brookside, just west of Highland Springs, where she has yet another garden area. Guests are always welcome to attend one of our meetings. For more information or if you are interested in joining, dues are only $15 a year. For information, please contact Sherry Case at (951) 533-3584 or Linda Powers at (951) 769-3101. Garden Club 42 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2022 | The Garden Club donated new benches to Sun Lakes
