SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS 20 | THE COLONY NEWS | JULY 2022 | COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD By Kathy Sullivan Everyone blames everything on Covid, so I am jumping on the bandwagon and blaming my year of non-stop travel on Covid. It is true this is the third year I have been trying to get to Africa and the second for Antarctica but who knew it would all get dumped in the same year along with a road trip to Newfoundland. What that means to my readers is that my column is not going to be doing places close to home but instead a travelog of what I am experiencing. I left The Colony for my epic road trip to Newfoundland, Canada in mid-May. You know, America is beautiful. Even driving for hours to cover the miles to get to Eastern Canada, it was hard not to stop and just enjoy the beauty of this great country. My first photo is from Idaho with a look at the back side of the Tetons. We almost always see the Grand Tetons from the Jackson Hole side, but they are equally beautiful from the western side. I took an afternoon to visit Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. I found out that when he was quite young, both his mother, from a long illness, and his wife along with his unborn child died during childbirth all on the same day. He went to North Dakota to use the rugged land and wild nature to restore his sanity. The best way to describe his National Park is to say that is the land where the badlands meet the grasslands. Large Buffalo and Mustang herds call these grasslands home. Due to some unforeseen accident which was totally my fault, I had to spend a few days in Minnesota waiting for a part to fix what I had caught on a rock on a dirt road in Idaho. While waiting I went to the headwaters of the Mississippi River. It is so amazing to look at this small stream and realize that it will become the mighty Mississippi. This is the first time I have been in the Northern parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Believe me, they deserve a month just on their own! I took an afternoon break and took a boat ride on Lake Superior to see Picture Rock National Lakeshore from the water. First, did you know that Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world and if you could suck all the water out of the lake and lay it over both North and South America it would cover both continents with a foot of water. I wish we could suck some out and send it to California! The picture rocks were quite interesting with ledges and rock faces made from mineral stained sandstone. Finally on June 1, I crossed over the border into Canada. My first night was blessed with a beautiful sunset on the St. Mary's River. Notice how much water you can see in the photo. There is twice as much behind me, making it a humongous river that big freighters traverse to get to and from the Great Lakes. I hope you enjoy my travelog. Next month will be from Canada.
