As we begin July and prepare to celebrate our country's Independence Day, it is important to reflect on our history. The Declaration of Independence is America's revolutionary Charter of Freedom and the document upon which the nation's founding principles were established. Did you know: 1. Only two men signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 - John Hancock, President of the Congress, and Charles Thompson, Secretary of the Congress. Most people signed this document on August 2, 1776. 2. The Fourth of July was not declared a federal holiday until 1938! 3. The message, "Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th of July," is written upside down on the back of the Declaration of Independence. 4. Thomas Jefferson's original draft was lost, and the one eventually signed is the "engrossed" document. Of the 200 printed copies of the Declaration made by John Donlap, only 27 are accounted for. Do you know what's happening in your community? One way to do that is by attending the monthly Board meetings. Here are some examples: In May, there was a lively discussion among Board members and residents regarding installation of ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) toilets. These are up to 3" higher than normal toilets. The purpose is to help our residents who require these. The result: Several ADA toilets will be installed, replacing current standard toilets. Aren't you glad you are reading this? At a special Board meeting on June 2nd, a presentation was made giving information regarding a solar project for The Lodge and Spa building. This was followed by a question and answer session. We thank the residents who attended and appreciate their excellent questions and comments. The result: The Board approved a letter of intent to begin the project. When you attend a Board meeting, there are updates on what our committees are doing. This is where the work is done — what social events are upcoming, what projects are planned, what new clubs are being formed, what's new in the Bistro, what new house color has been approved, etc. In April, a survey was conducted of our residents. Of the 1,580 surveys distributed, 631 individuals responded. We learned what was important and the level of satisfaction regarding several categories. Reasons for living in Four Seasons were the following: Overall appearance, clubhouse facilities, current HOA dues, roving patrol, affordability, and activities, in this order. This will help guide us and future Boards when making decisions. If our residents are less satisfied with something, the Board should take this seriously and try to correct/improve it. Sometimes it is perception (not knowing all the facts), but it is our responsibility to correct, improve, or provide information regarding resident concerns. Your Board is reviewing the comments and recommendations from the survey and will provide feedback. We live in a great community, in a great country. Keeping it great is the responsibility of all of us. We set a good example of helping each other. Get to know your neighbors, offer help when it's needed, and ask for help when it's needed. Here is an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
