26 | THE COLONY NEWS | AUGUST 2022 | SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS By Kathy Sullivan Just to refresh everyone's memory, Canada is the second largest country in the world, just behind Russia. It has more fresh water of any country in the world and is touted to have over a million lakes, which I think they underestimated. Every mile there is a large river intersected with lakes. Which of course means that there are more mosquitoes and deer flies. I left Ontario, skirting around Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, with a short sojourn into the old city of Quebec. I found out as much as I love being a solo traveler and have no problem being by myself, that I don't like to walk the city streets by myself. Not that I am afraid, but it is just more fun to have company to laugh and giggle with while shopping souvenir stores. Quebec is interesting. It is 100 percent French and they only have street signs in French, while the rest of Canada has them in both languages. In my travels, I was in Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. I pretty much followed the coastline and was rewarded with many quaint fishing villages. It was lobster season, and all along the coast lobstermen were busy checking their traps. I enjoyed driving down to the wharfs, as many areas take pride in painting their boats in bright colors. It was quite a sight to see. I loved walking on great boardwalk trails. One park in New Brunswick had 400 miles of hiking and biking trails. Lighthouses studded the beaches, some tall and colorful, others just a small building with a light on top. I also took a couple of walks through bogs. There is a lot of standing water, which eventually makes bogs. I especially liked seeing the carnivorous plants and the little flowers — but not the mosquitoes! I drove the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Peninsula in Nova Scotia, which is considered the best road trip tin Eastern Canada. Unfortunately, it rained for most of the trail, but it was still beautiful.
