ROMEOS OF THE ROUND TABLE ROMEOs, Retired Old Men Eating Out, have been gathering at the round table in the Clubhouse Lobby for years. It's a small table, usually able to accommodate only four to six people. As new residents join the group, I have seen this group of buddies expand the circle to welcome them. Strangers have become close friends. The Round Table started years ago, I'm sure, over a cup of coffee. Daily events, world problems, Monday morning quarterbacking and so many more top priority items have been discussed over the years. Disagreements, backslapping, "atta boys" and critiques of HOA events have also joined the ranks of items discussed. Donuts, cookies and coffee come and go quickly, often offered to passersby, since who could eat them all. After the food sharing, someone might suggest breakfast, and thus the table is usually cleared by 9 am. I'm a member of the 8 am aerobics class and have watched this phenomenon for almost 15 years. With technology, they share pictures, help each other with their phones and even start the day with music on the Clubhouse iPad. These are my friends, generous and kind, and always a smile and a wave and even an offer of a donut. We've all grown up together, and as some members leave The Colony, new members join. Here's to the ROMEOs as the group continues to move ahead. Del Mitchum, an HOA Director, so aptly wrote this limerick about The Table. I wish I had his way with words. LEGACY I always wondered who it was That started the coffee group. They sit and chat and grumble some And keep each other "in the loop." There is no one in charge it seems Not one person takes the lead. It all flows so naturally And seems to fit most all their needs. So, to whomever sat and started this I'd raise a glass and buy a round. But you and I both understand It's doubtful if he's still around. ~ Del Mitchum OUTREACH TO HISTORY By Rita Nastri, 698-8640 The ROMEOs | THE COLONY NEWS | AUGUST 2022 | 19
