CLUB NEWS | THE COLONY NEWS | AUGUST 2022 | 39 I am your featured Artist of the Month for August. I started painting in the 90s as a self-taught oil painter. My paintings were of the Old Masters style and Impressionistic. I have lived in The Colony for seven years and joined Taka Ritchie's Colony Watercolor class six years ago. Thanks to Taka, I have excelled as an award-winning artist in Watercolor. My subjects consist of flowers, landscape, birds, fish, insects, still life, abstract, portraits and animals. I am currently taking Advanced Watercolor classes in the Hemet of the Valley Art Association's classroom, conducted at the Hemet Art Gallery with award-winning artist and instructor Betty Pilley. I am also teaching our Colony Watercolor class with the help of Taka Ritchie, who is a Master Painter, as I continue to develop my teaching skills. Like many artists here in The Colony, I belong to the Murrieta Gem of the Valley Art Association where I have won many awards. I am currently an Executive Board member of this fine art group. This association has made it possible for its members to hang their artwork in Murrieta's local businesses. One such business is the Chef 's Grille. I also belong to the Hemet of the Valley Art Association where I have won awards, including first place and "Best of Show." Several of my pieces hang in the Hemet Art Gallery. I also attend our local Murrieta Artists Group that meets every Tuesday at the Senior Center from 12:30 to 3:30 pm. I hope you enjoy my paintings as much as I enjoy sharing them with you. Artist of the Month By Sylvia Maxwell, 818-667-1766 We invite you to join us every first Thursday of the month from 10 am to 4 pm (or whenever) in the Annex for several hours of quality sewing time, show and tell and camaraderie. Bring your own machine and notions, a current project or some handwork (chocolate is optional). Finish a UFO, or start something new and work at your own pace. We occasionally work on a group project, which is optional. If you have questions or a problem, bring it to the workshop. Problem solving is a shared, learning experience for everyone. We also have a supply of donated fabric you may use for charitable projects, if you choose. New quilters, if you know how to operate your machine and have basic sewing skills, you are encouraged to join us. Please bring Show and Tell, food to share (if you plan to stay for lunch, which is 1 pm) and ideas for group projects, field trips, etc. Is it time to start thinking about Christmas projects? This year we will be making our Craft Project on Thursday, Aug. 11, at 11 am in the Annex. It will be a fabric-covered string of lights that can be a garland for the top of your mantel, over your door top or whatever! We will be taking strips of Christmas or Chanukah fabric and tying them to a string of lights to make a lovely Christmas/ Chanukah decoration. Also, it certainly can be used as a gift. A sample can be seen in Kara's office. This is a prepaid event, with the cost of materials $5. To sign up, please contact Kara in the Activities Office or me.
