| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2022 | 17 The Golf Advisory Committee is composed of nine members. One representative from each of the four Championship Course clubs (Women's Golf Club, Lady Niners, Men's Golf Club, Couples Club), three Executive Course clubs (Ladies Executive Golf Club, Executive Men's Golf Club, and Saturday Morning Golf Group), and two At Large members. Each of the club representatives are chosen by their clubs and granted the authority to make decisions on behalf of their membership. The GAC has an Advisory role to the Master Board in making recommendations to guide their important decisions on issues regarding golf operations. We have two outstanding golf courses each with their own Pro Shop that are Sun Lakes Country Club's largest asset. While general maintenance is a huge undertaking each golf course also has its own unique maintenance requirements. These can involve drainage, ravines, bridges, trees, and drought tolerant planted areas unique to each course. While the GAC strives to see that all golfers experience an enjoyable round of golf, we are equally committed to protecting the beauty and value of this asset for all homeowners. Any resident homeowner is eligible to serve as an At Large member and you do not need to be a golfer to serve. Appointment to the GAC is for two years and there is an opening for the 2023-2024 term. The GAC is focused on golf course maintenance, playability, and addressing any potential safety issues. We also provide recommendations involving the use of golf facilities for various golf activities. If you are interested in being an At-Large member please fill out a Volunteer Interest Form and turn it in ASAP. The GAC will be selecting a new At-Large member in October. Sun Lakes Committee Reports Master Architectural The Master Architectural Committee (MAC) administers the Architectural Standards and Guidelines for the community. The committee's purpose is to preserve the established harmonious design of the community as a means to protect and enhance property values. (Article I) It is necessary to obtain the committee's written approval for all exterior architectural improvements before any work commences. What constitutes an improvement can be found in Article II Section 2.31 of the Associations CC&Rs. Basically any external work is an improvement. It is the responsibility of each owner to obtain approval for all Architectural Improvements. (Article I). An owner making unapproved exterior changes will be liable to the Association for the cost of removing and/or restoring unapproved changes to their original condition. (Article I). How does this apply to saving water and drought-tolerant landscaping? Because of the continuing drought, the Executive orders of Gov. Newsom concerning saving water, the water restrictions of the City of Banning and the concurrence of the Master Board; the MAC will be allowing more drought-tolerant landscaping. Instead of maintaining a strict 50/50 hardscape/softscape policy, the MAC is approving landscaping with more hardscape (concrete, rock, brick, slate, tile, etc.) than previously allowed. The MAC is allowing less softscape that is still harmonious with the design of the community. For those homeowners exploring Artificial Turf yards: Artificial turf is considered a softscape by the MAC. Most artificial turf has a lifetime warranty of 15 to 25 years and is also dog friendly. Homeowners should take note that some installers of artificial turf yards only want to give a one-year warranty on installation (workmanship). A one-year warranty on installation (workmanship) will not be approved by the MAC. The industry standard is a three-year warranty on installation (workmanship). If your installer does not want to give a three-year warranty on installation there are dozens of artificial turf installers who will give you a three-year warranty on installation (workmanship). The MAC is approving installation warranties of 3 years. From my experience, most artificial turf installation/workmanship problems don't show up for 24 months. If you are planning to install artificial turf in your yard, please read the requirements set forth in the Architectural Standards and Guidelines Section 7.20(o). By adhering to these requirements, you will save money and get a responsible contractor/installer who will properly prepare your yard for artificial turf. You will then have a trouble free, drought tolerant, and manicured artificial turf yard. ~ Roy Nierman, Chairman, MAC Golf Advisory
