"When the world wearies and society fails to satisfy,
there is always the garden." ~ Minnie Aumonier
Sun Lakes' Independence Day celebration was a
joyful event. It was a beautiful day, RED, WHITE, and
BLUE everywhere one looked, and there was a record
number of decorated carts for the parade that included
our own Garden Club entry. Many thanks and bravos to our creative
and talented cart decorating committee headed by Debbie Robbins
and Janie Haughn with the help of Debbie Brown, Sallie Flesher,
Sharon Machado, Wendy Seirup, and Sue Volz. To quote our president,
Beverly Agner, "Members can be very proud of our representation."
Also at July's meeting, our guest speaker, Betty Yarnell, provided
us with lots of information on organic vegetable gardening. Her
produce stand on Brookside, just west of Highland Springs, is open
again for the summer offering fresh veggies from her one-acre plot in
Hemet and a garden at her home in Cherry Valley. Because the plot
on Brookside needed to rest, it is not producing right now, but her
produce stand is there and open Thursday through Saturday until 1
pm.
Just a side note: our own Garden of Eat-em guy, Pat Pennington,
cautioned against burying or covering the exposed black tubing
of drip systems as the water gets super-heated quickly and could
damage plants.
Aug. 10, our guest speaker, Robert Ruseckas, will share his expertise
on hummingbirds. He is a fellow Sun Laker and his photos are often
on the cover of the Lifestyles Magazine. If you are not a member of the
Garden Club but love hummingbirds (who doesn't?), you are welcome
to attend as a visitor. Guests are always welcome to attend one of our
meetings. For more information or if you are interested in joining
(dues are only $15 a year), please contact Sherry Case (951) 533-3584
or Linda Powers (951) 769-3101.
