| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2022 | | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2022 | 61 61 Sometimes almost everything planned and prepared in advance falls apart. Then, there are those times when plans and preparation fall almost perfectly together. The latter was the case on June 18, when the Tennis Club met for a Tater Night Mixer followed by a Potato Bar on the South Clubhouse patio. So, what was it that went so well? First, the attendance. Twenty players participated in the Mixed Doubles play. About 30 enjoyed the meal. Second, the weather. The temperature was just right for 90 minutes of tennis and cool, but not too cool for comfort, while seated on the patio. Third, the good fun. Some of us sang and danced to The Potato Song with lyrics posted and soundtrack provided. Fourth, the cuisine. Baked potatoes that were generously garnished with butter, chives, cheese, bacon, and delicious chili. In addition was the presence of an old friend and former Club President, Jeff Gorman, currently residing in Carlsbad. Jeff served as our Club President in 2010. In conjunction with our meal and social time, President David Huetten introduced Jeff and asked all former Club Presidents in attendance to stand and be recognized. For those Presidents present, see the photo below. Club members continue to offer opportunities to those who are new to Sun Lakes to become active on our tennis courts and be included in our social events. All players at a variety of skill levels are welcome to drop-in to our Skills Session and Mixer on Sat., Aug. 6, 8 am. Also, each Tuesday and Thursday there is a gender-neutral drop-in at 8 am supervised by Bill Hendra. Beginners will do well to talk with Bill about how to go about working on the improvement of their skills. Finally, a Tennis Tip by Phil Hazelton, who addresses racquet stringing. According to Phil, different gauges in strings range from 15 gauge – thick, 16 gauge – thinner, and 17 gauge – thin. The tighter your strings the smaller the sweet spot and less feel and control. The looser the strings, and the thinner they are, gives a greater sense of feel and control. Again, it also depends on your racquet head size (90, 10 & 110). The best bet is to ask your tennis pro to evaluate your skills to determine the best fit for you. Always, remember to keep your eye on the ball and the fun in your game. Tennis The names and terms of service from left to right are: Kelly Curtis (2012), Jeff Gorman (2010), Jim Ball (2008), Scipia Curtis (2017), David Huetten (2022), and Bill Hendra (2015). Our immediate past President, Bob Walter (2019-2021), was unable to attend. A more complete listing of past Tennis Club Presidents is located near the north entrance of the South Clubhouse.
