Art Lovers The Art Lovers Club members enjoyed an interesting and fascinating meeting seeing and hearing the stories behind the special treasures that several of our members shared with us. Dee Wardell, below, showed us two dolls adorned with fabric from around the world. Joe Ashby, her fellow writer and world traveling companion showed several intricate wood carvings gathered during their extensive travels. Betty Anne Kreutziger is seen wearing as a necklace a 1905 "chatelaine" which was normally worn around the waist of the woman of the house in the 1900s. The name chatelaine derives from the French term châtelaine which meant the mistress of a chateau who would have worn a belt for her keys to all the many desks, chest of drawers, food hampers, pantries, storage containers, and other locked cabinets. She was the one who would lock or open these for the servants, housemaids, cooks and delivery persons. Among the paintings shown were Sheila Psaila's "Passing Storm" by Charles Smith, Joyce Chaney's Hawaiian paintings and Mary Ann Williams' treasured painting. A colorful print by Rizzi, "On the Road Again" featuring a small car adorned with love, peace and flag signs was shown by Jackie Ettinger. Nancy Fassett's son created a beautiful sailboat wall hanging hand-fashioned in several types of wood. Other interesting items were a seal skin and fox fur mask from Fairbanks, Alaska shown by Lainy Vinikow, an antique Japanese coin displayed by Pat Battles, and a unique collection of her grandmother's tiny pill boxes brought by Debbie Cea. Joanne Viner showed us some yard art that she has collected. A stunning 1942 Spratling silver and amethyst necklace was shown by Carol Jones. William Spratling of Taxco, Mexico was an innovative and talented designer of Mexican jewelry, silver hollowware, and furniture. He established a model for the artistic development and growth of the silver industry in Taxco. Karen Alexander showed us some antique artifacts, among them a blue camel, below, which were created using an ancient technique called cloisonné, fashioning a metal structure and covering it with fired enamel pieces. Our team is busy planning events for the rest of 2022 including a trip to the newly renovated Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla and a welcome event for our new members.
