54 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | SEPTEMBER 2022 | Couples Golf On a recent bucket-list trip to Pebble Beach, we were surprisingly reminded just how good we have it here at Sun Lakes. With the cart- path-only rule in effect, it was explained to us that because of the extreme drought conditions, walking onto the fairway was our only option. Of course my first drive landed as far away from the cart- path as humanly possible (my wife's was straight down the middle). I grabbed a variety of clubs and a snack for the road and started my trek across the mostly brown fairway. Hard-pan, dry with an occasional green spot, I was sadly disappointed, disillusioned and dare I say disgusted (okay, that's a bit dramatic). On the bright side, our trip to paradise made us realize how grateful we are to be a part of Sun Lakes Couples Club AND how fortunate we are to have such an AMAZING golf course maintenance crew. Southern California is affected by the drought more than most places in the country and yet our maintenance crew is able and willing to keep our fairways lush and our greens pristine! The leader of this group of superheroes, Mark Birchfield, explained that Sun Lakes is like a family and the relationships his workforce has with the members inspires them to take extraordinary pride in the work they do. It SHOWS! On behalf of the Couples Club we would like to introduce, honor, and thank the truly talented maintenance crew for their outstanding work ethic and attention to detail. You maintain the beauty and integrity of the golf course and we appreciate you. Because of your diligence, we get to enjoy a golf experience that rivals and exceeds the best there is to offer.
