"What man needs in gardening is a cast-iron back with a hinge in it." ~ Charles Dudley Warner Correction: I made and missed an editing error in last month's Lifestyles Garden Club article about exposed black tubing for irrigating the garden. The article should have read "cautioned against leaving the tubing exposed." My apologies for the misinformation. Please do cover the tubing with dirt or mulch to protect the plants from excessively hot water. At our August meeting our guest speaker, Robert Ruseckas, shared lots of delightful pictures and information about the beautiful, jewel- like hummingbirds. Robert is a hummingbird expert and a fellow Sun Laker, so he had much to say about the hummingbird activity in the pass area. His photos are often seen on the cover of the Lifestyles Magazine. According to our Garden of Eat-em guy, Pat Pennington, it's time to amend the soil and prepare for your winter garden; he plans to offer suggestions about that this month. Also, at our July membership meeting, Chris McCallum spoke to us about a project planned with a few fellow Pass Area residents in coordination with the city of Banning. The plans are to develop a 10-acre community garden at 22nd Street and the I-10 freeway. Garden plots will be made available within that acreage to all pass area residents who wish to grow their own gardens. At the time, Chris said he hoped to see some major progress on the project by November or December this year. We will likely hear further updates from Pat on the project this month. We're looking forward to this month's speaker. The owner of Beaumont Unique Flowers, Kandy Buckley, and her new designer have some different and perhaps unique arrangements on their agenda. We'll no doubt learn some new tricks in flower arranging. Do look for the Garden Club table at the Activities Day on Sept. 24 from 1 to 4 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Someone will be there to answer your questions. Guests are always welcome to attend one of our meetings which (unless otherwise announced) are on the second Wednesday of every month at 10 am in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Dues are only $15 a year. If you can't make it to the Activities Dy and have questions, please contact Sherry Case at (951) 533-3584 or Linda Powers at (951) 769-3101.
