| Four Seasons Hemet Herald | SEPTEMBER 2022 | 13 Library Committee Several months ago, Shirley Etemadar, wrote about our puzzle collection. I identified the author with the wrong name. Not only is Shirley the author, but we have made her the puzzle lady. She is in charge of all things related to puzzles. We know it looks messy but Shirley has some great ideas to "clean it up!" I am rerunning it giving her the proper credit. Howard Feigenbaum will kick off our return of "Author's Talks" Sept. 15. As most of you are probably already aware, we have a very extensive library here in The Lodge. But wait. What about a look at our puzzle collection? We presently have almost 200 puzzles just waiting for you to take home. We have 300 piece puzzles that are generally the easiest to put together. We have 500 and 750 piece puzzles that may give you a bit of a challenge. For the more adventurous, there are lots of 1,000 piece puzzles. In fact, there is at least one 2,000 piece puzzle in our collection. Since we have so many, Pat Hall suggested the residents could add a date when they donate a puzzle. That way when we need to cull them, this will help so much. Thanks for the idea, Pat! All of these puzzles are beautiful pictures just waiting for you to put together. Some of the puzzles are of locations around the world such as New York or Rome. Some are of animals, many small town scenes as well as several replicas of famous works of art. All have pictures on the box that you can follow as a guide to putting them together. If you've never worked a puzzle, I suggest you start with the outside border. Each of the border pieces have a flat edge (corners have two) making it easier to get started. It also helps to sort the remaining pieces by color. Then pick a small group of pieces that appear to go together. It doesn't matter that they don't fit next to the border. Eventually, as you work the other colors and pieces, they'll all fall into place. There are health advantages to putting a puzzle together. According to a recent study by Archives of Neurology, people who work on puzzles live longer with less memory loss or dementia. Working puzzles can improve your problem solving skills and enhance your attention span. Puzzles are a great meditation tool and stress reliever… well, perhaps not if your very first puzzle is 1,000 pieces. Come visit our library. It's here for you! ~Shirley Etemadar Shirley Etemadar, the puzzle lady!
