8 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | SEPTEMBER 2022 | We get so excited in spring. Finally we get to plant! Then, along come the dog days of summer. Our flowers and shrubs begin to suffer from the heat along with us. You may think that spring is the best time for planting flowers and shrubs. However, the fall season is also a great time to plant. The fall season brings a much lower risk of sun scorch, and hopefully some rain to help the new plants establish healthy root systems. If you choose plants native to the Inland Empire region, you will be rewarded with reduced maintenance and plants that attract pollinators such as native birds, butterflies, and bees. Native plants that naturally grow within the Inland Empire have been present before settlement began. Most came to exist in our region by their own means, and these plants have co-evolved and are codependent with the insects, birds, and wildlife of our region. By selecting climate-appropriate plants like those from our own local natives, your garden will automatically adapt to the Inland Empire's seasonal summer drought and frosty winter months. When you use native plants in your garden, you get a garden filled with life, along with reduced summer irrigation. You can view native plants at EMWD's Water- Wise demonstration garden. It is located at their headquarters, 2270 Trumble Road in Perris, California. The garden is open to the public during EMWD business hours, with self-guided tour materials, available in the Main Office. In addition, guided tours may be scheduled by contacting EMWD's Public and Governmental Affairs Department at (951) 928-3777 ext. 3430. As a reminder to Legends' residents, the "Architectural Standards and Regulations" limits your planting within the Landscape Easement Area, to only annual color. The irrigation system is not set for watering the added color, so hand watering by the resident will be necessary. Legends residents need to complete and submit a Landscape Maintenance Request form, for plant or tree replacement or removal. If a Legends resident request the removal or replacement of currently installed healthy plant material within the Landscape Easement Area, the committee most likely will not approve their request. However, the resident will be given the opportunity to have the plants replaced by paying the full cost of labor and materials. A long time committee member Addis "Scotty" Scott, is leaving our committee in September. We cannot thank him enough for the service he has given our community for the past eight years. A tireless advocate for the Legend homes' landscaping, he will be greatly missed and we wish him a well-earned "retirement!" Landscape Committee
