6 | THE COLONY NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2022 | ACCESS CONTROL & SAFETY By Bruce Hartwig, 696-5115 The Access Control and Safety Committee is an advisory committee to The Colony Homeowners Association Board of Directors and the General Manager relating to all issues of community access and safety of residents and visitors. In the event of a major disaster, our committee will work hand-in- hand with the Emergency Preparedness Committee to assist in maintaining the integrity and safety of all Colony residents. Our function is to evaluate access control and general safety of The Colony and the effectiveness of Community Patrol. The Access Control Committee receives monthly reports and statistics from Community Patrol (Nordic Security). These reports include traffic enforcement, emergency responses and incident reports. The monthly report from Community Patrol indicates the following activity and violations that Nordic Security responded to and/or assisted in keeping with the safety and welfare for the Association: Security Statistics • 22,269 Jackson gate entries • 7 Property/residence checks • 8 Stop sign violations • 24 Medical, fire and police incidents • 30 Various parking violations • 18 Garage doors open • 65 Miscellaneous incidents The committee would like to thank the community for their continued home improvements. We understand that many of our painters are booked until December. We would like to share information from an article titled "30 Basic Home Maintenance Tips" by Emma Diehl from an April 30, 2019, newsletter. 1. Touch up exterior paint – house, walls, fences. This adds curb appeal and can save you a full paint job. If your last paint job is over 10 years old, it is time to repaint. Fresh paint can have a 51% ROI at resale! 2. Check gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters can cause water to damage and/or stain the paint on your stucco, which can lead to needed repairs or, more costly, a new paint job. 3. Check your water bill to track water consumption. This can alert you to leaks within your home and yard. 4. Maintain your roof. Take care of loose or broken tiles before water damage can occur. A professional roofer can inspect your roof if you suspect damage or would like a routine inspection. 5. Clean out your exhaust fans to prevent mold. 6. Fill in cracks in your driveway and walking paths. Small cracks start to look unappealing. Resurfacing them before they become large can save costly repairs later. 7. Have backyard trees and shrubs trimmed to prevent damage and other potential issues. Besides looking nice, it is healthy for the plant. 8. Inspect your door and window seals before they crack and let air and heat escape. Go for it! The results and prevention are worth the effort. ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL By Gloria Brosky & Diane Schultz
