32 | THE COLONY NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2022 | On Aug. 5, after a long-awaited rain, the courts dried and 16 of The Colony's fittest took the courts for the month's Paddle Tennis Tournament. Ellen Micheli and Madeline Thatcher hosted the event and served a breakfast that drew many more spectators than players. Delicious, as always. Ellen is the master at creating even draws that ensure competitive play between players of even abilities. This Friday was no different. The Ladies Division was won by Laurie Freres, winning the title by two games. Well done, Laurie! The Men's Division was won by Tom McClure. People often ask, "Why does Tom win so often?" His strategy is simple. He chooses great partners. The Ladies Luncheon was Aug. 10. Linda Kight and Madeline Thatcher hosted the event with the theme, "A Day at the Beach." A great time was had by all. There was no Racquet Club dinner in August, but join us at the next one on Sept. 10. Racquet Club By Tom McClure, 303-7838 Did you know that pickleball has a day to celebrate everything pickleball? National Pickleball Day is celebrated on August 8 each year. It all began 57 years ago in Bainbridge Islands, WA, and the rest is history. Rumor has it that three friends, Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum, were on a quest one afternoon to find a game to fight their families' boredom but didn't have all of the necessary equipment for any one backyard sport. The scavenger hunt resulted in a wiffle ball, a net, and plywood paddles. Having grown in popularity, by 1972 Barney McCallum began designing and selling paddles specifically for pickleball and founded Pickleball, Inc. The US Pickleball National Championships were held for the first time in 1984. The popularity of the game increased exponentially. Between 2016 and 2019, the number of players reached 3.3 million. Not to be outdone, the number of pickleball players at The Colony has grown tremendously, and we have our own tournaments right here on the first Saturday morning each month. Please contact me if you would like to become part of our wonderful pickleball family. I will be happy to meet with you whenever it is convenient and teach you the basics of the game at no cost, and we have all the equipment you need. Please join us at the courts to play or be entertained by the fastest growing sport in America! August's tournament winners were Jamie Calvert, Amy Horlock, Kathy Lewis, Scott Ross, and Larry Fimon.
