58 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | SEPTEMBER 2022 Recently, a longtime member of our Ping Pong Club, Barry Pope, passed away. In his memory, Lian Lee has written this article to honor him and the contribution he made to all of us who played ping pong with him. It's so sad to hear that Barry passed away. It's even more frustrating to realize that he left this world lonely. Although some players encouraged him to come out and play ping pong, which he always enjoyed, after COVID-19 restrictions ended, he didn't accept the invitations. He had a big heart. After he realized that I played ping pong with all my heart, but didn't have good skills, he offered me the opportunity to practice against a ball machine in his garage. I did take the offer and practiced. Yes, my game has improved. Thank you Barry. One day while we were playing ping pong, there was a dispute regarding who just served the ball. He told me that a coach in Redlands where he played sometimes told him about the "divide by four rule." This rule helps us to determine who's supposed to serve. The rule is as follows: Combine the total points scored. If it's an even number, then divide by four. When the answer is a whole number, then the turn belongs to the side who serves first. For example 12 divided by 4 equals 3. The serve belongs to the side who served first. When the answer is any .5, then the turn belongs to the side who serves second. For example 6 divided by 4 equals 1.5. The serve belongs to the side who served second. If, after dividing by 4, it's an odd number, then it's a second serve. Minus one from the total score then do 1.2.&3. For example 17-1=16. 16 divided by 4 is 4. It's turn for the side who serves first. In memory of Barry Pope, let's try to learn this formula. Rest In Peace, Barry. We'll miss all the good times we played ping pong together. ~ Lian Lee Come join all the fun-loving ping pong players at The Courts. We play ping pong Monday - Saturday from 2 to 4 pm. We also offer free ping pong lessons for all levels of players coached by Jim Wong on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1 pm. Want more information? Call or email Niles Sundstrom at (818) 826-1380 or nilstrom@gmail.com. ~ Niles Sundstrom Table Tennis This summer has been flying by. Lots of warm humid weather has necessitated that we play early in the morning or late in the afternoon and early evening. We still have many players enjoying the courts and we are welcoming many new players. Many mornings all eight courts are filled with players outside waiting to join in the fun. We have had great gatherings from the Fourth of July golf cart parade to our Hot Summer Nights in-house pickleball tournament. This was created by our own famous Kelly Vuchnic. We played in round robin games for five weeks each Wednesday. She did a fantastic job and we had a potluck and BBQ on the last tournament day to celebrate good times and award overall winners. If you are new to Four Seasons and are hesitant about learning pickleball, we have our beginner coach, Jeromee Liebenberg, teaching at 9:30 on Saturday mornings. No equipment necessary, just come on down and try it. Check out our Mission Statement at right. It is posted at the courts and we all strive to abide by it. Our goal is to extend kindness and courtesy to all players. Thank you and keep active anyway you can. ~ Marty Key, (562) 331-0817 Pickleball Marty Key and Lorenzo Amaya winners of overall points in the five night tournament Barry Pope Hot Sumner Nights tournament.
