38 | OHCC LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2022 | What could be better than a day on the bay with OHCC friends and neighbors? You need only to join the Ocean Hills Sailing Club. As of July, the club boasts 201 members including 132 renewals and 69 new members. The club has completed 36 sails YTD with some planned in August and 12 scheduled for September and October. With additional sails expected in October and future sails being planned for November and December, the club expects to exceed 60 sails during 2022. We've had some exciting sails this past month. On one sail a member taught us how to do "360s." It goes without saying that it was exciting for all aboard. In fact, it was so much fun, so we did it several times. We also had our second sunset sail with Fleet Captain Charlie Cappello at the helm. After sailing to the ocean and around in the bay, the crew adjourned to dockside at the Ketch restaurant where we enjoyed a wonderful happy hour made especially nice by crew member Sue Peterson. Following dinner, we motored back to the bay where we spent some time close at hand with what must have been 50 or more beautiful sailboats – large and small, old and new – all rounding the mark with brightly colored spinnakers filled with air. They were all participating in the Wednesday evening "beer can" races which have been so popular on the bay for many years. It gave us an opportunity to study sailing technique and to review "rights of way" as the racing sailboats vied for position rounding the mark. As usual, there is always Navy activity in the harbor. The crew on one sail witnessed the Zumwalt (a USN stealth destroyer) and a large container ship pass each other — one going out and the other coming in assisted by tugboats. It was a day of gusty winds. The Captain, the Mate and several of the crew had their work cut out for them as evasive maneuvers were undertaken to stay out of the big ships' way. The club is still working on the election of its Board of Directors and appointment of officers for the upcoming year. The new slate as elected by a majority of the club's membership will finish out the remaining of 2022 and all of 2023. More will follow on this as nominees are identified and voting is conducted. Fair winds and following seas. Sailing Club
