SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | OCTOBER 2022 15 By Theresa Rossetti, Resident This month's 'ful is suspenseful. Not frightful, although I might get into that as well. I love an "on the edge of my seat" movie or book. My favorite oldies of this genre are by Alfred Hitchcock. On a list of top 100 Mystery and Suspense films, 11 of his films are in the group. I've seen all of 10 of them and 99% of one. I was hiding behind the movie theatre seat in front of me for the end of Psycho. Hitchcock used the impression of fear and slowing down or speeding up of time, instead of blood and guts, to keep his audience in a state of suspense. The only scene I remember with blood in it was in Psycho- the shower scene with Janet Leigh. Since that's a black and white movie, the "blood" was actually Bosco's Chocolate Syrup. I'll bore you with my favorite suspense flicks. First Hitch: North by Northwest (the Mount Rushmore one), Rear Window (the broken leg one), Rebecca (the creepy housekeeper one), Strangers on a Train (the precursor to Throw Mama from the Train one) and To Catch a Thief (the "don't ever let Grace Kelly drive" one). I'll add Notorious (the Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman and a bunch of Nazis one), Marnie (the Sean Connery one), Suspicion (the "is Cary a good guy or a bad guy?" one) and Shadow of a Doubt (the scary uncle one). Other than Hitchcock I'll mention Wait Until Dark with Audrey Hepburn as a blind woman and Richard Crenna (better known from TV's The Real McCoys) as one of the bad guys. The Manchurian Candidate, Frank Sinatra as a brainwashed GI and Jessica Fletcher, I mean Angela Lansbury, as one nasty mother. The Sixth Sense, Silence of the Lambs, Laura, Mystic River, Air Force One, The Great Escape, Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls all kept me on the edge of my seat as well. I'm sure you can think of more. If you're looking for horror movies, I offer (although have never seen) The Shining, The Night of the Living Dead, The Exorcist, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Evil Dead, Alien, and Halloween. Many of these have multiple sequels, so feel free to scare yourself silly over and over again. While my suspense favorites might not be popping up on TV that often, October is the best month to find scary movies to stream or even on "regular" channels. So, pop some popcorn and settle in for some nail-biting or hiding your eyes this month. A Ye Of "Ful" The SDV's Quilting Club has been supporting the Childhelp Village in Beaumont with quilts for abused children (boys and girls) ranging in ages six to 14 years old. When the children arrive at the facility, they have few or no personal belongings. The children are provided with hygiene kits and clothing. The Quilting Club is looking to donate suitcases (carry-on size) to the Village to give to a child when they are scheduled to leave the facility. If you have no use for a suitcase gently used and in good condition, it would be greatly appreciated and well used by an abused child. Of course, new suitcases would also be greatly appreciated. Your donation will make this another successful community drive. Please drop off your donation at the Lodge during the month of October. If you have any questions, please contact Irene Cianfarani @ irenecianf1@gmail.com or Ann Lontz @ twlontz@gmail.com. Thank you for your support and making a difference in an abused child's life.
