| THE COLONY NEWS | OCTOBER 2022 | 37 You have to love Southern California. August's paddle tennis tournament was delayed for a few minutes to dry the courts after a 4 am rainstorm. September's tournament, on the first Friday, was held on a day when the projected high temperature was forecasted to be 106 degrees. But as is the custom on The Colony paddle tennis courts, 16 hardy souls brought their water bottles, towels, hats and fortitude to the tournament to play in the September tournament. Hal and Jeanne Acord provided a wonderful breakfast. The monthly paddle tennis tournament is the only place where fudge brownies are considered breakfast. The draws were well matched as evidenced by the close scores. In the Ladies Division, Darla Gonzales (18) bested Linda Kight (17) by one game. Well done, Darla! In the Men's Division, relatively new Colony resident Scott Daniels (18) won by three games above Mark Tamayo (15). Good job, Scott! The monthly Racquet Club dinner was held "off campus" at Jersey's Pizza. Karen Nichols and Lou Ann Campbell hosted a really fun evening. The monthly Racquet Club Ladies Luncheon was hosted by Karen Nichols and Bonnie Hinman. The theme was "Arrival of Fall." After the scorching first week of September, everyone celebrated the coming of cooler weather. Open play tennis should be picking up in October with the cooler weather coming. August and the first part of September were brutal heat wise. We will start at 8 to 10 am each Saturday, except for the third Saturday of the month. There is no signup, just come down with your racquet. If you don't have a racquet, there are loaners in the box by the tennis courts. Come out and play a few sets and enjoy the camaraderie with other players. If you would like to bowl, please check with me as we may or may not have any openings on the teams. We bowl every Thursday at 1 pm, but we get there about 12:30 pm to set up and get in a little practice. You can always come to Bowlero and watch and maybe get the urge to join. We still practice on Mondays around 12:15 pm and have at least one pair, or sometimes two pairs, of lanes just for us to use. Next month I will have more news and statistics and standings to share. Bowling By Hank Fleischer, 714-272-3684 Thursday's Bocce has been a bit slow due the extreme heat, but hopefully October will bring cooler temperatures and more players and/or spectators to play and socialize. We will be starting at 4 pm in October. If you have any family members visiting, please bring them along to participate also. It's a great way to meet your friends and neighbors. Bocce is fun and easy to learn. Just bring your snacks and a choice of beverage and play. Water and ice are always provided.
