26 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2022 FALL, FIRES, AND FLOODING Fall is a time for fun but don't forget that it's also the beginning of the traditional wildfire season in California. Higher temperatures and Santa Ana winds blow hot air through the canyons. It's important to keep a Go Kit in your car. Review the contents of your Go Kit and toss out the old stuff, bring in new stuff, and beef it up it with extra stuff. Remember to put the Go Kit back in your vehicle after cleaning it. The kit will not do you any good sitting on your porch or on your garage floor. A typical Go Kit includes: 1. Sturdy backpack, duffel, suitcase 2. Food and water 3. First-aid kit 4. Medications and prescriptions 5. Emergency tools 6. Phone and laptop chargers 7. Cash in small bills 8. Important papers 9. Changes of clothes and jacket 10. Personal hygiene supplies 11. Extra glasses or contacts 12. Blankets & pillows 13. Pet supplies 14. Keys The city of Beaumont is well aware of the traffic problems south of the I-10. Unfortunately, Beaumont has received very little cooperation from Cal. Trans. and Union Pacific regarding increased traffic during freeway detours and while stopped trains block crossings. I guess the threat of earthquakes along the San Andreas fault are not enough. Dr. Lucy Jones told us about the legendary California floods of 1861 and 1862 when rain fell for days and filled lakes and rivers. The overflow from the flooding decreased the amount of arable land in the state by around 24 percent. I have seen the Pineapple Express bring in storm after storm into Southern California. The result is that the excess water fills our flood control basins to the brim. Back in 1969 when this occurred, all we got was wet but I am afraid that we may experience an even bigger catastrophe due to the numerous homeless encampments in these areas. If any of these topics interest you, we invite you to our next EPC meeting on Oct. 18 at 10 am in the RCN Conference Room. ~ Michael A. Mendoza, srmendoza@verizon.net Emergency Preparedness Committee I'm sure we are all just waiting for this weather to cool down a bit. Our dogs are all missing the Canine Corral and they can't wait to get out there to play. In the meantime, the Canine Corral is pleased to announce our upcoming "Yappy Hour" on Thursday, Nov. 3, from 4 to 6pm. Come and have some snacks and a glass of wine with us. While we are not permitted to bring our pets inside The Lodge, we would love to spend this time talking about our four-footed friends and sharing our stories and pictures. This "meet & greet" is not just for Corral members. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in finding out more about the Canine Corral. Membership applications will be available, and Committee Members will be there to answer any questions. A major fundraiser for the Corral is the Honor Plaque Program. Plaques can be seen on the fencing surrounding the Corral and on the benches inside. Forms will be available if you would like to purchase an Honor Plaque. We would like to thank all who have contributed to the Corral through the purchase of Honor Benches and Honor Plaques, and all will be invited to celebrate in our first "Yappy Hour." The Canine Corral is totally self-funded. We subsist wholly on our member registration fees and donations. We will be conducting some fundraising raffles at this event. There will be a sign-up sheet in The Lodge just so we can get an approximate head count of attendees. So, save the date! We look forward to seeing you then. ~ Teri DiMarino, teridimarino@gmail.com Canine Corral Council
