Ponder this: "Gardening Rule: When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant." Author unknown. The highlight of last month's meeting was a presentation offered by the owner of Beaumont Unique Flowers, Kandy Buckley, and her new designer, Patricia Flowers. (That's right — her last name is Flowers.) They provided some interesting and unique ideas on arranging and maintaining dish gardens. At our Oct. 12 meeting, our Garden of Eat-em guy, Pat Pennington, plans to share more ideas for amending the soil and planting for a winter vegetable garden. Barbara Maslowski, our vice president, offered this bit of wisdom about reasons to consider planting in the fall: warm soil temperatures and cooler air temperatures, less weed competition and fewer insects, optimal time to fertilize and the possibility of precipitation, and maybe the best reason, a fresh fall perspective. Our featured speaker this month is the very knowledgeable Raphael Hinojosa, from Cherry Valley Nursery who has been with Cherry Valley Nursery for 16 years and is one of their managers. He is sure to enlighten and inspire us about what and how to plant to give the plants a head start for next spring and summer. This should be especially helpful since so many folks are redoing their yards because of the water restrictions we are facing. The last bit of news is an update on the four new wrought-iron benches that the Garden Club donated to the Sun Lakes community. Shiny new brass plaques have been placed at the top center of the back rests which read "Sun Lakes Garden Club 2022." Guests are always welcome to attend one of our meetings which (unless otherwise announced) are on the second Wednesday of every month at 10 am in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Dues are only $15 a year. If you need information, please contact Sherry Case at (951) 533-3584 or Linda Powers at (951) 769-3101. Garden Club 42 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | OCTOBER 2022 |
