| OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2022 | 11 "Ah, September! You are the doorway to the season that awakens my soul." ~ Peggy Horton September has always been a time of new beginnings for me, a time that awakens a surge of energy and creativity within my soul. As a high school teacher of 41 years, I always found that special excitement of readying myself for the first day of school. My room was freshly scrubbed, the desks set in the exact way to furnish the best of communication. Posters adorned the walls with quotes from the famous theatrical artists and writers of the time. Lesson plans were finished, handouts were ready for students to grab as they walked into my room. All that was left was the laughter and excitement as the bell announced the beginning of a new year. Even after all these years of retirement, those special feelings still remain as September introduces a new year of learning and growth. And what better way to grow even in the autumn of our lives than to find a special book from our library Jean Hefler, our president, purchases approximately twenty new books each month. A list of the titles can be found in our monthly newsletter. Members can reserve a new book by signing up for it in the library. When the book becomes available, you will receive a call from one of our volunteers. You should, however, frequently check the reserve shelf as many books are relocated there if there are not a lot of requests for a particular title. The bestselling, beloved writer of romantic comedies such as You've Got Mail, Delia Ephron writes Left on Tenth: A Second Chance at Life, a memoir about her own late-in-life love story. Delia had struggled through several years of heartbreak encompassing the loss of her sister and husband, both to cancer. She channeled her grief by writing a New York Times op-ed. The piece caught the attention of Peter, a Bay Area psychiatrist. Recently widowed himself, he reconnects with Delia after 52 years. They share past feelings, but she is suddenly diagnosed with AML, a fierce leukemia. With Peter and her close girlfriends by her side, she shares with startling clarity, warmth, and honesty her journey to face death. You become one of her team of warriors and become believers yourself. "This memoir is a heart-wrenching tale of second chances at life and love." TIME Magazine Delia masterfully and hilariously reminds us that there is more life to be found just around the corner. It is a powerful, beautiful, life affirming testament to hope and meaning in the darkest hour. Speaking of our darkest hours, let us never forget Sept. 11, 2001. ~ Sally Benton Library Association OCTOBER BOOK BUYS • Armored by Mark Greaney • Black Dog by Stuart Woods • The Challenge by Daniel Steel • Counterfeit by Kristin Chen • Desparation In Death by J.
