| OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2022 | 15 Village Squares Mike Haworth, our caller, has completed all the calls in Social Square Dance, and we have been simply dancing, using all the calls we have learned and making them part of our memory. We will be moving on to new mainstream calls so that our club can advance. To add a little fun and variety to our dances, we are reinstating our tradition of wearing black and white on the last Wednesday of the month. It was always fun to see a sea of black and white on those Wednesdays, but, of course, this is optional. Also, on the last Wednesday we will be alternating SSD and plus dances throughout the evening, so that our plus dancers will have more opportunity to dance at an advanced level. Verl Lobb's memorial will have taken place by the time you read this. His family planned a fitting tribute to Verl, with plenty of good food and his signature margaritas and Bailey's, which he so generously supplied us with at special events. He really enjoyed bringing his sense of fun and good cheer to the club. We plan on having a new beginner class starting in January, so if you know of any people who would be interested, be sure to encourage them. We will have details later. In the meantime, we hope to see you in a square! Line Dancers How's your brain? When you exercise, the levels of chemicals in your brain that encourage nerve cells to grow is increased and since dancing requires you to remember various steps and sequences, your brain power is boosted, which helps to improve your memory! Also dancing incorporates several brain functions at once – kinesthetic, rational, musical and emotional. Utilizing all of these at the same time can further increase your neural activity, helping reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. It's a lot of fun too! Although some of our songs are country western – most are not. Just last week we were learning a dance to Hernando's Hide-away, a tango! Line dance classes are once a week: Beginner (1): Tuesday, 10:30 – 11:30 am Improver (2): Monday, 12:30 – 2 pm Intermediate (3): Thursday, 2:30 – 4 pm (schedule may vary, call Sunny to confirm) Want to try it out? Come on by. Beginner's class is $5 (60 minutes). Other levels are $7 (90 minutes). You do not have to be a club member for the first couple of 'try it' classes. After that you will also need to join the club. Dues are $10/year. If you are interested in participating in our activities and are not sure who to reach out to for further information, please call Sunny Griffin (970) 708-0443. Also, please visit our website, https:// ohccvillagelinedan.wixsite.com/linedancing. A little bit of Havana and a lot of rock and roll! The August Doo Wop and Disco Dance Club party brought Cuba to OHCC's lanai with "Havana Nights." CJ the DJ played some salsa music and our old favorites — a blend of music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. From the Latin music of the talented acoustic guitarist during the cocktail hour, to the sweet guava dessert to top off an authentic Cuban dinner, these party hosts thought of it all. If you would like to learn how to become a member of the Doo Wop & Disco Dance Club, ask the front desk for a Doo Wop Club membership form or print one from "Social Clubs/Doo Wop Club" on the Ocean Hills Country Club.com website. Just complete the information, put it in an envelope marked Doo Wop Club. Enclose a check for $10 per person for annual dues payable to "OH Doo Wop Club" and drop it by the Clubhouse front desk. We will send you information about the upcoming parties. Our October party, featuring the Band, Hot Pursuit, will be the day before Halloween. The ghosts and goblins are certain to be there (as well as a wide assortment of other costumed members). Hope to see you on the dance floor! Doo Wop and Disco Dance Club The Party Committee (L-R): Nancy Trimino, Teresa Deutman, Linda Erwin-Rios, Sue Silva, and Joni Molloy.
