Art Lovers The Art Lovers spent a delightful day at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla learning about many of their art works from our knowledgeable and animated guide. This extraordinarily beautiful and impressive facility recently reopened after a four-year complete renovation. The museum is known for collecting works by promising, emerging artists as well as major international figures in contemporary art from Latin America, California and the Tijuana area. Celia Alvarez Muñoz created the large green house on canvas with airbrushed acrylic paints above which she installed six intersecting street signs. In this work as well of many of her others in this collection, Muñoz emphasizes the multiple pronunciations in our languages, e.g., Mesa Street intersects with Maysa Street. Growing up in a Texas border town she addresses the tension between our linguistic, cultural and political cross-border worlds. Another artist whose works we admired was Sam Gilliam and his creation called Dance With Me, #1, #2 & #3 consisting of three large fabric pieces of polyester painted with bright acrylic paints which sway, twirl and dance. Gilliam was in the forefront of abstract Color Field painting during the 40s and 50s. His canvasses moved away from the wall and the stretcher and hung freely. Color Field painting is a style of abstract painting which is characterized primarily by large fields of flat, solid color spread across the canvas. In Color Field painting color is freed from objective context and becomes the subject in itself. Some of the other works we viewed were from well-known artists such as Niki de Saint Phalle, Andy Warhol, Joan Mitchell, Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWitt, Raúl Guerrero, Craig Kaufman, Mely Barragán, and others. In order to see all the beautiful art, one needs more than one visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego at La Jolla, a truly magical place. In September, a welcoming coffee was planned to introduce all 61 of our new members to the Art Lovers Club, to meet the Board members and to learn about our trips, artists and activities. Another visit to the Oceanside Museum of Art is in the planning stages.
