| OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2022 | 39
September did not always cooperate with those in
our Club who love to hike. The heat from August into
September led to canceling some scheduled hikes
in warmer inland areas surrounding us. A walk on
the cliffs and beach in San Onofre had to be canceled
because the tides never cooperated with our plans.
Mid-September did get us to the beach in Carlsbad,
entering the beach at the stairway at Coast Road and
Christianson Street. Over twenty walkers enjoyed
the beach that day, over two miles walking south and
back.
Earlier in the month we explored the Gardens at
Swami's in Encinitas. Hikes were abundant as we got
into the cooler part of September, Clevenger Canyon
between Escondido and Ramona a good example.
Additionally, two other events were most important
to the Club in late September:
1. A team of our members took part in the Walk
to end Alzheimer's, Sept. 24 in Escondido's Kit Carson
Park as the starting point. Our team was led by
Jack Shabel. This is the largest such event in North
America.
2. Our yearly picnic was held at San Dieguito
Regional Park on Sept. 29, hosted by our President
Rich Halkyard. Chicken, salads, desserts, beverages
prepared for and provided by our membership. At
this time, we name our officers for 2023. The
article next month by this writer will feature
this picnic.
Those reading this write-up about our Club
for the first time, join us. Walking or hiking in
the outdoors is priceless. Our longer hikes are
well planned, well led, sometimes challenging,
always enjoyable.
Learn about our hikes and walks on the
internet site MEETUP. Scroll to OHCC walkers
and hikers. Every walk and hike scheduled is
outlined there, and allows you to sign up for
the walk or hike of your choice. Our leader,
Rich Halkyard, can be reached at redcisc@

can answer any questions you have about all of
our activities. For walks specifically, you can
