44 | OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2022 | Racquet Club The 2022 San Diego Senior Games at Oceanside's Melba Bishop Park drew 12 OHRC pickleballers competing in singles and doubles over the 3-day tournament. A large OHCC contingent was present to support our players in spite of the brutal heat. Singles medalists included Fred Savage (gold), Larry See (silver) and Man Lee (bronze). Doubles honors went to Larry See & Pete Cannon (gold), Sid Saltzman & Mike Katz (gold), Craig Cameron (silver) and Heidi James (silver). David Levine refereed the tournament. Heidi James' participation in the regional competition was especially heartening, and she sends along "A big shout out of thanks to our Racquet Club – it's their support and encouragement during my cancer treatment that got me playing again and motivated me to represent OHCC in the tournament." While September brought the end to beginner pickleball lessons for a boatload of new players, it also revealed a growing line of others waiting in the wings to learn how to play. Even as Herb Livsey, Mike Hoggatt, and their volunteer coaches oversaw culminating class tournaments, the club board began planning for a comprehensive year- round series of classes for beginners and experienced players. Residents interested in taking up pickleball (or paddle tennis) are asked to contact the Help Desk at ohrchelp@ gmail.com to sign up for free beginner lessons available for all OHCC residents. We've been doing a trial run of pickleball skills sessions over the last couple months to determine how best to help experienced players up their games. Guy James is leading the efforts, enlisting a cadre of advanced players to share their techniques during 90-minute clinics. Volunteers include Joyce Baker, Harvey Bernstein, Sue Bixler, Ron Boren, Pete Cannon, Charlie Cappello, Greg Freeze, Tom Haas, Mike Hoggatt, Bob James, Heidi James, David Levine, David Steele, Patti Storm, and Marvin Wheeler. Lessons learned from this experiment will help shape future offerings. Stay tuned for the wrap-up report next month on our first-ever Game Day on Sun., Oct. 2 – an afternoon member-only special event on the Clubhouse back lawn. Social chairs Pele Pyle and Laura Urban and dozens of volunteers will have something for everyone: corn hole, lawn darts, horseshoes, bocce, Jenga, pickleball toss, tennis bowling and more – with a food truck and ice cream as well. Golf Club There were quite a few winners at the Touring Amateurs golf tournament at Oceanside Muni in August. Here's some of the big shots of that day: Lowest Gross Foursome (-7): Joe Moore, Mary La Forte, Bob Becker and Alison Vincent. $15 per. Lowest Gross Men (-10): Mike Stern, Bill Norberg, Neal Wagerle, and Tom Harwood. $15 per. Closest to the Pin: Roxana Davison and Bob St. Laurent. Golf for Two at Oceanside Muni. Magic Circle: Lyle Conifrey, Roxana Davison, Judy Fry, Alison Vincent, Laura Yotter, Dan Matthews, Scott Sloan, and Scott Taylor. $7 per. Looks like Roxana and Alison had a particularly good day! Way to go everyone. Next up are Touring Amateur Tournaments at Pala Mesa on Mon., Oct. 17 and Welk on Mon., Nov 14. With luck and good weather, we should be playing our full complement of tournaments at our course very soon. Guy James emphasizes a couple key points about the 3rd shot drop. These Racquet Club pickleballers competed in San Diego Senior Games- note the medals! Senior Games players. Head Pickleball Coach Herb Livsey preps his Level 1.5 class for their end-of-season tournament.
