| OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2022 | 7 Golf Course Renovation Report We toured the golf course today, Mon., Sept. 12. The course was in much better shape than it was three weeks ago, due to this recent spate of hot weather and plenty of water which has made a significant difference to the turf growth on the course. The humidity has really made the seeds pop, so the course is looking ready to play. Jon Cancel, our golf course superintendent, has been continuing to add sod to those areas that were bare on some of our greens. However, the sod is not readily available, so he has not been able to repair all of the bare spots as of today. Jon continues to dial in the irrigation to make it more efficient. The Hunter representative was out today and reprogrammed the computer to include the latest as-built drawings which will make the system irrigate as Jon has directed. We have secured another radio channel on which to broadcast the irrigation instructions, which will eliminate the interference we were experiencing on the previous channel that was preventing the controller from delivering water to the right sprinkler heads as directed by the computer. As of today, we intend to open the front nine of the golf course by Fri., Sept. 23. The Recreation Department, the Golf Committee and the Golf Club are working on the details of how the opening will work. The number of players will be regulated so as not to overwhelm the course, and of course there will not be any visitors in the early months. Some of you may know we are involved in some legal disputes with our contractor that could potentially change some of these dates. I am writing this article on Sept. 12, my birthday, a big one, so it is difficult to predict what will happen between now and Oct. 1 when you read this article. Obviously that situation could affect these dates. We are continuing to work on the back 9 and hope to be able to open that in the near future. In order to do that, we will have to fence off the portion of the lake that has already been excavated to make sure no one and can accidentally get into that area. That means we will not play the 17th hole. As you would expect, we will open the 17th hole when the lake is completed. We will continually update you on any possible changes that could improve the opening date for the back 9. We are trying to make that as soon as possible after the opening of the front 9. We have recently received several letters that have expressed a tremendous amount of anger and disappointment over the postponing of the opening of the front 9. We agree with most of the points made in all of the letters, and certainly have the same disappointment and anger over the issues we have faced in this drawn-out project. We want you to know that it is even more frustrating for us because we know all the areas where we have been stymied by either supply chain issues or contractor performance issues. We will not let these issues stop us from opening the course as soon as it can possibly be done. Thank you for all your support and patience. By Don Lopez, Golf Course Renovation Committee Chairman
