| THE COLONY NEWS | NOVEMBER 2022 | 7 The flags in the Murrieta Field of Honor will fly in Town Square Park starting November 5 through November 12. This awesome spectacular recognizes heroes of all kinds, while also representing service in action, including many volunteers from The Colony. Longtime Colony resident George Steele and his wife, Sue, have been involved with the Field of Honor since its beginning in 2009. A Rotary Club of Murrieta past president (and past Rotary District 5330 governor), George has been part of the Field of Honor planning, a hands-on volunteer and sponsor throughout the Field of Honor history. For many years, George and Sue served in key positions as the Field ended and they tabulated each of the flags going back into storage. Other Colony residents have joined in the effort, helping assemble the flags along with working in information and on-field sales. Colony residents Sharon Boll and Al Roth were honored as "Field of Honor Heroes" in recent years, as was former Colony resident Don Krampe. Additionally, the late William "Red" Schrader was honored as the "oldest Marine" as he served birthday cake to the "newest Marine" in the annual Marine Corps birthday celebration at the Field of Honor. "Volunteers are essential to the success of this annual display," George said. "Our Rotary Club members number around 40, but we need hundreds of people to put the flags up and take them down, along with tending the Field during Veterans Day week. "Personally, the Field of Honor has been one of the highlights of my 37 years as a Rotarian," he adds. Not only are we recognizing those who have served our country in so many ways, but we are giving the public an opportunity to dedicate flags to their loved ones, whether military or not. "During the week, fifth grade students from the Murrieta Valley Unified School District come to the Field visiting the various sections with a school lesson to be completed. They are learning history and the tradition of service that has made our country great." The Field of Honor, presented by the Murrieta Rotary Club in partnership with the City of Murrieta, will officially open on Saturday, Nov. 5, with a ceremony at 10 am and a Veterans Expo, which will be available until 2 pm. The Veterans Expo will feature services that are available to vets and their families. Other activities are planned throughout the week, and all are free and open to the public.
