For 37 years, Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District has been
sponsoring the Oldympics, a series of competitions for people age 50
and older. Once you sign up and pay your entry fee, you will receive
a T-shirt, a date, and time.
This year's events were Sept. 20 to Oct. 8. On the final day, there was
an Awards Banquet, with gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded to
the first three places.
More than 600 people competed this year. Events are bench press,
billiards, bingo, bowling, chair volleyball, cribbage, Fun-tathlon,
golf, horseshoes, lawn bowling, pickleball, pinochle, Scrabble,
shuffleboard, swimming, table tennis, tennis, Texas Hold'em,
tournament blackjack, and track and field.
This year Terrie Garcia and Herman Jamilano played mixed
doubles tennis and won Gold! Terrie Garcia and Cindy Bice played
ladies doubles tennis and won Bronze, while Herman Jamilano and
Gerry Griffin played men's double and won Silver. Congratulations
Tennis Titans.
Next year, maybe we can plan to have more participants. Look for
announcements in July of 2023. It's a lot of fun.
