FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | NOVEMBER 2022 41 Classic Film Group We will be showing Rebecca, a 1940 American romantic thriller, on Nov. 22 at 6 pm in The Lodge Theater. This is Alfred Hitchcock's first American film and his only Best Picture winner. It's a masterpiece of haunting atmosphere with Gothic thrills and gripping suspense, in which a lonely man and a lovely girl struggle against the secret of Manderley Manor. A self-conscious woman juggles adjusting to her new role as an aristocrat's wife and avoiding being intimidated by his first wife's spectral presence. On vacation in Monte Carlo, wealthy widower Maxim de Winter (Sir Laurence Olivier) meets a young woman who is working as a lady's companion to Mrs. Van Hopper (Florence Bates). They spend a good deal of time together, leading to love and marriage. The second Mrs. de Winter (Joan Fontaine) is somewhat overwhelmed when, after their honeymoon, they return to Manderley, his vast estate. She not only has to deal with a huge house and numerous servants, but also with the dour and domineering housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers (Dame Judith Anderson). She soon feels inferior and a disappointment to everyone, particularly her husband Max and Mrs. Danvers, who still adores her dead mistress. Mrs. de Winter finds it hard to fit in. The presence of Maxim's deceased wife, Rebecca, seems to permeate through the house and Mrs. de Winter can't shake the feeling that she is constantly being compared to her. Mrs. Danvers, who was Rebecca's personal maid, makes things as uncomfortable as possible for the new Mrs. de Winter. Mrs. de Winter has the constant fear that memories of Rebecca will drive her and Maxim apart. She finds out that she must live in the shadow of his former wife, Rebecca, who died mysteriously several years earlier. The young wife must come to grips with the terrible secret of her handsome, cold husband, Max de Winter. She must also deal with the jealous, obsessed Mrs. Danvers who will not accept her as the mistress of the house. Over time, she grows to know more and more about Rebecca. Not all is as it seems however, particularly after a striking discovery is made in the sea near Manderley. We screen films you won't find at the big Cineplexes: documentaries, indie films, foreign films and other little gems that don't get wide release. Our first screening for the month, on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 6 pm, is the film All In: The Fight for Democracy (USA 2020, 1 hr. 42 min., English). Here is a brief description from IMDb. com: "The documentary takes a look at the history, and current activism against voter suppression; barriers to voting that most people don't even know is a threat to their basic rights as citizens of the United States." Our second screening for the month, on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 6 pm, is the film Streit's: Matzo and the American Dream (USA 2015, 1 hr. 23 min., English). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "On New York's rapidly gentrifying Lower East Side sits the Streit's Matzo factory. When its doors opened in 1925, it sat at the heart of the nation's largest Jewish immigrant community. Today, in its fifth generation of family ownership, it remains as the last family owned matzo factory in America. Streit's: Matzo and the American Dream tells the story of the factory, of the family, of its workers, of its place in the rich history of the Lower East Side and America." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge Theater has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early; we hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability.
