| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | NOVEMBER 2022 | | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | NOVEMBER 2022 | 59 59 Our annual Mixed Doubles Tournament was held in September with eight teams participating. Phil Hazelton gave us professional leadership in setting up the event. Kim Jensen, Vice-President of the Tennis Club, awarded first place trophies to Pat Carter and Joy Bailey, and second place trophies to Michelle Carter and Jim Ball. David Nethercott and Kim Jensen won in a closely contested Consolation round with Steve Van Loon and Lauri Hazelton. Our annual Club tournaments continued in the month of October. A Women's Round Robin Tournament was offered on the weekend of Oct. 7 through 9. Also, a Men's Doubles Tournament was held on the weekend of Oct. 21 through 23. In between these two tournaments, a delicious Oktoberfest meal was held in the South Clubhouse featuring suitable German cuisine and self-selected libations. Now in November, the Tennis Club will host our annual Turkey Shoot on Sat., Nov. 19. In this fun event participants purchase opportunities to stroke serves that hit targets in order to secure pumpkin pies and turkeys suitable for a Thanksgiving table. Then, to conclude our Club calendar of events for 2022, on Sat., Dec. 10, a brief Quarterly Meeting followed by a catered holiday dinner will be hosted for all Tennis Club members and their guests at the South Clubhouse. Holiday themed entertainment is planned. Further, drop-in play is readily available for all Sun Lakes residents every Tuesday and Thursday starting at 8 am led by Bill Hendra for all skill levels. Then, every first Saturday of each month, a formal Drop- in event is featured at 8 am beginning with a Skills improvement session. All Sun Lakes players are welcome, especially those who wish to get started playing on a regular basis. Finally, a Tennis Quiz by our tennis pro, Phil Hazelton. He asks, "Who can get this right? You are playing doubles. Your partner returns a ball and hits an opposing player in the head. The ball comes back on your side volley height. You react and finish the point by hitting the volley for a winner." Phil continues, "Question: was the ball that hit the opposing player a legal shot when it came back on your side?" The answer: "No! Rules state that if the ball hits your body you have lost the point. It is legal only when the ball hits your racquet hand as that is considered part, or an extension of, the racquet." As always, remember, keep your eye on the ball and the fun in your game. Tennis Mixed Doubles Champions (L-R) – Pat Carter & Joy Bailey; Mixed Doubles Runners-up – Michelle Carter & Jim Ball. Mixed Doubles Consolation Runners up (L-R) – Lori Hazelton & Steve Van Loon; Mixed Doubles Consolation Winners- Kim Jensen & David Nethercott
