40 | OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2022 | Swim & Wellness Club Our September meeting featured club member and Learn to Swim instructor Ken Krueger. Ken shared information about developing a workout plan. For swimmers, Ken has several recommendations, starting with varying your workout. Do as many of the strokes as you can - freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, side stroke, kickboard. You can also vary your workouts by doing strokes differently. For one lap, just use your arms. The next lap, just use your legs. Alternating breathing is another technique, where the swimmer alternates taking a breath, first in a three-stroke pattern for several laps, then a five-pattern for a few more. When first starting out a pool exercise routine, concentrate on duration (amount of time). For example, try doing several laps and then increasing the number of laps as you build strength. Then change the intensity. Do a few laps slowly, then increase your speed, ending the last lap with the fastest speed you can do. Workouts for folks who are water walkers or exercisers should feature similar variety. Walk forward, then backward, then side to side. Use your arms, moving them up and down, back and forth. Use weights to add more difficulty to your routine. Variety is the spice of life! It helps physically as well as mentally. President Robin Bleeker updated the membership about other pool happenings. Club Board members, as well as members of the Community Services Committee and the Recreation staff, continue to receive complaints about residents who don't follow the pool rules. Ongoing issues include children who aren't properly supervised by grandparents and parents, children younger than five who are in the pool, and guests who enjoy pool amenities without an OHCC resident with them. The CSC has proposed a plan to the Master Board where guests will need to register at the Clubhouse desk before coming to the pool. The plan will now go to a rules committee. Stay tuned about that. Another ongoing pool issue is the frequent breakage of the lane markers. PLEASE do not climb over the markers. This contributes greatly to their breakage. OHCC maintenance director John Manley is investigating the purchase of extra lane markers to have on hand in case one breaks. But they are very expensive! Let's take care of the ones we have. Members also heard an update on the Second Pool Feasibility study from committee member Ed Tasch. Ed shared the summary of findings from our month-long observational study, and also shared the next steps that the committee is taking. Check out our club's new cabinet on the pool deck! The cabinet is mounted on the fence, just to the right of the gate going into the Clubhouse. There you'll find all kinds of pool information, as well as information about club happenings. Check it out to learn when the next meeting will be, how to sign up for FREE swim lessons, and how to join the club, among other things. Mark your calendars for our next club meeting. We'll gather on Thurs., Nov. 17 in Abravanel Hall from 6 to 8 pm. The business meeting time will be brief and will include taking nominations for officers and voting. Then, board members are planning a special pre-Thanksgiving celebration, with a light supper and social time. Save the date! Ken Krueger - Club Member and Speaker Our New Cabinet on The Pool Deck
