| OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2022 | 31 A couple of members were asked to take "Photo Booth" pictures at a recent Doo Wop party. The theme was "Back to School," meaning back to school in 1960-something (or perhaps earlier) and you never saw so many poodle skirts in your life. The photo shoot came with some challenges. We had an hour to shoot and expected 180 people. That comes to about 20 seconds per person. Since most of the guests were not solo it made it a little easier, and we had two photographers. But the party organizers had put a "Back to School" banner up in a corner of Abravanel Hall that was poorly lighted. In fact, initially looking through the camera viewfinder I saw nothing but darkness. With help from the organizers, we got a light turned on and some doors opened, but it was necessary to use our camera flash, which is something of a problem. Let's face it, our median age in OHCC is something like 74, and a bright light on the face is the last thing to make us look our best. Still, we had to use flash to get any photos in the dim corner. The challenge afterwards was to use tools in post-processing to soften the bright light. We use Apple Photos on the desktop, and the photos we took were the maximum size that our cameras could produce. This is great because it allows us to crop out distractions and still have a large file. We discovered that the built-in filters in Apple Photos had an option called "Dramatic Warm" which brought some nice color to people's faces and diminished the shadows. We used it on nearly every photo and the results were very good. What did we learn? Well, we needed to scout out the site to figure out where to station ourselves to have good light. We only gave ourselves 15 minutes and it wasn't enough. The light was truly awful. We needed two banners so we could each take photos separately – we found that when both of us were shooting, somebody in the picture was always looking the wrong way. But the party goers were so enthusiastic and having such a good time we couldn't really miss. The Photography Club is open to all residents. Dues are $8/year. We (usually) meet on the third Thursday at 1 pm in Lamia. Photography
