28 | OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2022 | Sewing Club It's time to celebrate the fact that we all made it through another trip around the sun. I am convinced that 2023 holds promise and refuses to let any "naysayers" into my thoughts. We will be busy! We will be creative! And – there will be lots of laughter in our adventures! Please remember that there will be NO MEETING this December. Our first meeting in 2023 will be Jan. 5 at 9:30 am in the Lamia Room. We will be welcoming our new President (Linda Griffith), and our new Vice President (Barbara Ott). We hope to see you there! January will bring us Do Dues Day on Sat., Jan. 14 from 10 am to 2 pm. Please note that this year do dues day is the second Saturday of January. On this day, bring your checkbook or cash; peruse all of the social clubs and organizations; then decide which ones you would like to join in order to have new experiences. Gain new knowledge and make new friends in 2023. We'll be there with a display of our crafts, hope you can join us. Please note – if you cannot make it to Do Dues Day, you can always just drop off your check for our $7 annual membership fee at the front desk in the Clubhouse. Checks should be made out to Sewing, Etc. As always, the Kneedlers and Hookers gather on Tuesdays from 3:15 to 4:30 pm, where you can pick up a new skill, share, or visit. Also, on Tuesday evenings (6 to 8 pm) and Fridays (12 to 3 pm) several quilters, crocheters and sewers get together for "Sew & Chats." Both of these gatherings are loosely structured and help to keep us in touch. Save The Monarch Butterfly By the time you read this, the butterfly sanctuary will have closed for the next two months. The garden continues to flourish, but as happens every year, the cool weather has caused our butterflies to seek their wintering spots. A few continue to visit us, but they get fewer each day. The SMB Club will use this time to do maintenance work in the garden, including cutting back the milkweed as it loses its leaves and goes dormant and amending the soil for next year. The falling leaves will be left on the garden to serve as cover and eventually mulch. When we reopen February 1st, we will be welcoming a much more mature garden and an expanded crop of milkweed. It's been a wonderful first year – building the garden, bringing so many varieties of butterflies back to OHCC, and enjoying the several hundred monarchs that made their home here. Thanks again to all the volunteers who so diligently tended the garden – and especially to Susan Cooke, who gave so much of her time to get our enterprise off to a successful start – and to all the residents who supported our work and who enjoyed its results. In the next two months, the SMB Board of Directors will be developing ways to further fulfill our mission of saving the Western Monarch. The community can look forward to some fun and interesting events in the coming year.
