| OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2022 | 9 Methane Gas Contributes To Climate Change Methane is the second largest contributor to climate change. It has a warming impact 80 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has said that the amount of methane in the atmosphere has jumped by 15 parts per billion in 2020 and 18 parts per billion in 2021. Methane is produced by emissions from decaying plant matter from agriculture, particularly rice paddies, tropical wetlands, even backyard compost piles, and bovine flatulence (as in central California). The WMO is speculating that as the planet gets warmer, organic material decomposes faster. This process could feed on itself; if tropical wetlands become wetter and warmer, more emissions are possible. The WMO study comes on the same day as a report from the U.N. which says that the world's governments haven't committed to cut enough climate emissions, putting the world on track for a 4.5-degree Fahrenheit increase in global temperatures by the end of this century. Many cities have made good use of their yard waste composting programs by channeling the methane gas into energy to heat and light buildings. Perhaps if we all send our kitchen and garden waste to the city in our green or appropriate totes, they will make better use of the methane. Landscape Committee As 2022 comes to a close, the CIMC has completed several projects, including the new front entry to our community. On-going projects include the planning for our Lanai remodel, proposals for the remodeling of the original Abravanel Hall restrooms and changing rooms, the updating of the women's front entry hall restroom, the updating of the Clubhouse meeting rooms and proposals for the enhancement of the back entry gate. With the holidays upon us, there are increased activities and events. We encourage residents to use the new electronic board in the information hallway to stay apprised of all activities. And speaking of holidays, we've been decking the halls and hope you'll enjoy our new interior holiday decor that compliments our beautiful Clubhouse this season: a theme of coastal holiday elegance. We continue to work with clubs and committees at their request. We also work closely with the HOA to enhance and improve our Community image, to ensure consistency of our message and protect home values. If you are considering joining a committee in 2023, the CIMC welcomes all residents with experience and interest in design, communications and marketing to consider joining us. We wish all our residents a joyous holiday season!
