44 | OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2022 | Racquet Club 2022 may be winding down, but the 2023 Board elected at the November general meeting is ramping up for even more activities this coming year. With Bob James once again serving as President and CFO (Chief Fun Officer), the aim is to engage members both on and off the courts. The Board leadership team will include Carol Ann Ferrol, John Gildner, Lorraine Novellino, Ann Rike, Sid Saltzman, and Dannica Wood. High on the priority list are the beginner pickleball classes free to all residents. This year we're requiring that anyone wanting to join the class first attend a 60-minute orientation to learn about the physical demands of the sport necessary to play safely and have fun. The next session will be Thurs., Dec. 1 from 6 to 7 pm. Reservations are required; contact our Help Desk at ohrchelp@gmail.com to get on the list. These information sessions will be held regularly. In 2023, beginner classes will be conducted in groups of four to six students and an instructor. The four 90-minute sessions are designed to ready new players to participate in Novice Drop-in where they can then start building their skills with others playing at a similar level. Loaner paddles will be available to use during class. The Help Desk is building a list of those who have the fundamentals down and want to focus on particular pickleball skills such as dinking, serving, third shot drop, etc. These skills sessions – for Racquet Club members only – will be offered at various times throughout the year. One sure way to improve is to make use of the pickleball machine. Attend a short training session on how to use the machine the first Thursday of each month at 11 am at the Clubhouse Courts. Reservations are not required to use the tennis, paddle tennis, or pickleball courts, but if you want to play at a particular time or place, reservations make doing so more convenient. The Racquet Club manages the online reservation system, and you'll need a Skedda ID to log in. Contact our Help Desk to request the link and to get a copy of current rules for using the courts. Skedda even has a free app that allows you to book using your mobile device. Do Dues Day is Jan. 14, but there's no need to wait. Renew or join now! The 2023 membership form is downloadable from our website at https://ohccracquetclub.org Questions, comments, and suggestions are always welcome at our Help Desk ohrchelp@gmail.com. Golf Club Well, our course has been open for a few weeks now. Men and women's leagues are in full swing, and our First Guys and Dolls tournament took place on Sun., Nov. 7. The photo of Joan McAlister, Kathleen Cannon, and Marilyn Vettleson captures these lovely ladies' joy of being the first group to play the newly renovated back nine on Oct. 7. Speaking of Marilyn, she and husband Tom are soon retiring from their duties of running tournaments, handling our handicaps, and overseeing the computer operations in the Casa. Thanks to these tireless people who volunteered a lot of time and energy to keeping our golf course and tournaments humming. The second to last 2022 Touring Amateur Tournament at Pala Mesa occurred on Mon., Oct. 7. Closest to the pin winners were Kathy Moskovitz and Adrian Verduzco. Each won two free rounds at Pala Mesa. Magic circle winners were Jerry Moskovitz and Natalie Sentz, each rewarded with $15. Nice going everyone! And we can't forget Mel Feintuch who won the putter drawing. Hope that the new putter helps Mel. Finally, the Golf Club general membership meeting was held on the lanai on Wed., Oct. 12. A large crowd enjoyed the free pizza and refreshments provided by the golf club. Very generous! Of note was the election of officers: all current officers will continue their duties. President – Greg Cies, 1st Vice-President - Mike Guillory, 2nd Vice-President, Bill Boston, Secretary – Jean Boston, and Treasurer – Mary Laforte. Congratulations to all. Looking forward to our 2023 season when we will have a full slate of tournaments, including the reintroduction of Special Tournaments and the opening of the new pond, and, hopefully, a functioning bathroom on the back nine. Don't forget to flush! Coach Charlie Cappello emphasizes "eye on the ball" to beginners Brian Buchan and Jaime Rook 2022 Board takes a bow (L to R): Sid Saltzman, Lorraine Novellino, Ann Rike, Dannica Wood, Bob James, and David Johnson (Carol Ann Ferrol absent) David Levine demonstrates proper use of pickleball machine to Sue Bixler and Roxanne Dillon
