| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | DECEMBER 2022 | 55 Table Tennis/Ping Pong My name is Darline Erreca Indacochea. I am a Southern California native of Basque descent born and raised in Chino, CA. I was co-owner in the sheep/farming industry with my then husband for 21 years in the Perris/Lakeview area. Also working with the Val Verde USD, I retired three years ago after 24 years in the secretarial field. Prior to retiring, I relocated to Sun Lakes five years ago primarily for the active lifestyle and all the amenities. Table tennis was always in my growing up years playing either at the recreation center, at home or at someone else's home. Finding table tennis here in Sun Lakes has brought that enjoyment back in my life after not playing for 45 plus years. . Our group is diverse and inclusive, from ages 55 to over 90 years old, from beginners to some highly-ranked individuals quick to give out tips and rules of the game. Come on over and start having some fun; make some friends while getting immediate and long-term health benefits! For more information or to find out our schedule, contact our coordinator Gary at (805) 722- 7427 or John Williams at (951) 489-9737. We are happy to answer questions and look forward to having you join us. ~ Gary Lile We have one major event remaining in 2022 — our annual Holiday Party on Dec. 10 in the South Clubhouse. Dinner will be preceded by a brief Quarterly Meeting with the main agenda item the election of Executive Board members for 2023. Entertainment will follow. At the close of the year, reflection on the year's events and activities seems appropriate. My own personal reflection is to note that one area in which we have done well has been our effort to make the Club open to new and prospective members. Our Tuesday and Thursday Mixed Doubles Drop-ins led by Bill Hendra, and our regular first-of- the-month Drop-Ins (with a Skills Session led by Phil Hazelton) have offered an occasion to play for Sun Lakes residents of all skill levels. There are additional ways that the Tennis Club seeks to remain open to new and prospective members. One is through our glass display case, and surrounding area inside the north-side entrance of the South Clubhouse that includes literature, trophies, pictures, and Membership Forms. Another way is our Club information posted on the Sun Lakes website. The names and contact information of our newly elected members of our Executive Board will be listed there after the December Quarterly Meeting. My own efforts as Club Secretary have centered on making sure that accurate and timely information is made available well in advance of our scheduled events. That information goes out by email to our membership. In addition, the Club has a Facebook page that was set up in mid-October. This 'Sun Lakes Tennis Club FB Page' is private based on requests that are made through our FB page managers. Membership is open to all. We expect the page to assist in telling the story to Sun Lakes residents of our many activities and events. Now, a Tennis Tip presented in four parts all about one's approach to Hit and Recovery. One big misconception all tennis players have, according to Phil Hazelton, is that we are too slow. The fact is we are often too fast in our reactions. Therefore, Tip 1: Control your reactions by deciding if the shot is forehand or backhand as the ball crosses over the net by simply turning our shoulders, then run to the ball. Tip 2: Have the tip of your racquet point to the back fence with shoulders turned as you do so. Tip 3: Your follow through (after contact) should bring you back to the ready position, KEY WORDS 'in balance.' Tip 4: After you hit the ball be aware of your court positioning, where you are on the court. You have time as your shot travels to your opponent to return to a neutral position on the court. If you have questions about this, see your local pro. And always remember to keep your eye on the ball and the fun in your game.
