| THE COLONY NEWS | JANUARY 2023 | 35 Cracks, Dots, and Bams…oh my! It's Mah Jongg time, a game enjoyed by a group of fun-loving, energetic Colony ladies. Mah Jongg at The Colony actually started in the mid-90s. As interest grew, so did the groups. You can find Mah Jongg games taking place now almost any day of the week. Ask any of the almost 50 ladies involved here and they will tell you how much they love the game, the wonderful friendships formed, and the incredible fun they have! Fun Facts: Mah Jongg was first brought to the American public from China in the early 1920s. Today, more than 40 variations of Mah Jongg exist around the world. The game was originally called "Maque" in Chinese, which means "sparrow." It is said that the clacking of tiles during shuffling resembles the chattering of sparrows. So, if you hear a clattering of "sparrows" around the Clubhouse, you can rest assured it's the Mah Jongg ladies, getting together to socialize, exercise their brains, and escape for a few hours from the worries of life! Interested in joining a group? Call Susan Turner at 909-772-2588.
