| OHCC LIVING | JANUARY 2023 | 45 Golf Club Guys and Dolls returned on Sun., Nov. 6. The tournament was dedicated to Tom and Marilyn Vettleson for their many years of service for the club. Both Tom and Marilyn put in tireless hours as directors of the Board. Both ran Guys and Dolls and worked on many of our tourneys. Tom also handled the duties of handicap chairman, and Marilyn spent more than a few hours taking care of the Casa computer. Thanks Tom and Marilyn for keeping our golf club humming. And Congratulations to Debbie Machnick for her hole in one in that tournament. Guys and Dolls resumes in February 2023. The last Touring Amateurs of the season took place on Mon., Nov. 14. Some of the lucky winners include Arian Verduzco who walked away with an Odyssey putter. Closest to winners received two free rounds of golf at the Welks course: Randy Royter, Bill Nordberg, Barbara Thompson, and Sheri McDaniel. Wayne Worsley was the sole golfer to hit the magic circle on hole 11, winning $20. The lowest gross foursome were John Jarf, Bill Nordberg, Mike Stern, and Neal Wagerle. Touring Amateurs, Guys and Dolls, and Special Tournaments recommence in 2023. Happy New Year! Check out the Billiard Room's bright new look. After 38 years we have finally taken down the dismal cloth wall coverings. Two other rooms had these same coverings replaced many years ago. Ours had become so weak that cleaning would have destroyed them. No photo yet – the work was not finished at press time, but it should be done by the new year. We will be at Do Due Dues Day on Jan. 14. New members may join for $7, less than the cost of a single hour at a pool room filled with noisy players and dirty tables. Good news – if you were a 2022 member, you pay nothing – we will extend your membership for another year. Better news – if you are 90+, you've paid your dues in life, so membership is free. Best news – if you are 100+, we pay you $7! The 2022 Board of Directors has been reelected for 2023. They are Charlie Payne, President; Gary Pelcher, Training; Cal Roe, Tournaments; Kathy Thornton, Treasurer; Janice Pelcher, Secretary. We will not have groups gather for lessons or tournaments until the outlook for COVID and the flu improves. We want to resume them, BUT… Did you think COVID was over? "The number of new COVID-19 cases has remained in recent weeks at about 300,000 per day." That's nearly 10 million new cases per month. Think COVID is no longer serious because it seldom kills? Ask one of the millions continuously disabled with Long COVID. Then there is the flu. Why are people so concerned with it? Because it's taking off extremely rapidly this year, way ahead of past years. "It could be in a week or two we are seeing many more COVID patients than we are seeing RSV or flu, but the real concern is we will see a large influx of all of them really stressing out the hospitals' capacity to care for these very sick patients," said Nancy Foster of the American Hospital Association. We all know people who have suffered. Most of us know people who have died. We choose to remain careful and hope that you will too. Billiards Our next Bingo will be Sat., Feb. 11, 2023. The Bingo Board is looking at ways to expand and involve more residents. Some things we are considering are some afternoon games, and maybe a Family Bingo afternoon where residents can bring their grandchildren for a fun afternoon of Bingo.
