56 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JANUARY 2023 Player of the Month: Perry White Where were you born? I was born in West Covina, Calif. but our family didn't live there long. From the age of three to 17, I grew up in San Jose, Calif. When did you move into Four Seasons? Sally and I moved to Four Seasons in August of 2015. Previously we had lived in Independence, Calif.. What attracted you to Four Seasons? We visited our friends, Dennis and Diane Gray, several times after they retired and moved here. We loved the beauty of the Four Seasons community and activities that were offered here. What field did you work in before you retired? Before moving here I pastored Sierra Baptist Church in Independence. What are some of your favorite activities at Four Seasons? I enjoy active things like ping pong (aka table tennis), pickleball, paddle tennis, and occasionally tennis. I also enjoy sedate activities like playing card games as well as billiards. To what interesting places have you traveled? I never thought I would be able to travel much but I have been blessed to be able to travel far more extensively than I ever dreamed. I traveled to Israel three times. I have also been to Turkey, Egypt, Kenya, England, China, Canada, Mexico, and all 50 states. How did you get started playing ping pong? My parents gave me a ping pong table for my 13th birthday. When I was in college I played occasionally at the student lounge. What do you enjoy most about ping pong? I enjoy ping pong in a room where there is plenty of space to move around. I like to lob a lot which seems ridiculous to advanced players but it helps my defense plus provides me with opportunities to have a nice slam. People like to make fun of my slams and pretend that the little ball hurts when they are hit, but really it is all about the fun of connecting well and getting good exercise. Would you encourage other residents to join our ping pong club and why? I do encourage others to play ping pong. It is a great sport that can be played year round. I know that many people are hesitant to try because even the intermediate group seems too advanced to play. But most people are very understanding and encouraging. I know they have been for me. We play ping pong Monday through Saturday from 2 to 4 pm at The Courts. We found that simple household chores took many more calories each day, but high-rise parking structures with malls make us walk less after parking our cars. We talked about which modern devices we might try to do without in an effort to get more exercise. Someone suggested cleaning and chopping fresh veggies and fruit instead of buying the expensive pre-cut variety would be cheaper, more healthful, and would burn a few more calories. Even using a broom instead of a leaf blower on the driveway would be great exercise. Keep in mind that a lot of our daily activities are the result of habit. If you do something every day or several times a week for four to six weeks, it can become a new habit for you that may keep you more active without having to think about it. And even if it's only occasionally, you'll still burn a few extra calories. This month's "Thinner Winner" was Andi Henderson with Nyla Cheely in second place. They lost the most weight. This happens with exercise, mindful eating, motivation, portion control, new recipes and meeting attendance. Congratulations you two. You may find that TOPS can help you as well. We meet on Tuesdays at 8:30 am in the Ballroom. For more information, call Andi Henderson at (918) 497-6491. ~ Andi Henderson Night Beer Pong The Night Beer Pong group is expanding our play hours as we enjoy shorter days this winter. We play at The Summit Mondays, Wednesdays, Sundays, Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Thursdays, and Fridays from 5 pm to 2 am, or until the last person goes home. For those of you who haven't played beer pong, just think, "Hey! Do I like fun? Also do I like beer?" then come on down and join us. We are also serving pretzels and disinfect our ping pong balls once in a while. ~ Joe Blow, joeblow@yahoo,com (909) BEER-ME
