42 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JANUARY 2023 Our Book Club selection for Jan. 10 is Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami. Murakami is probably the most popular contemporary Japanese author, sometimes called "the Hemingway of Japan," and his prolific work has been translated into more than 50 languages. This short novel is a good introduction to his work. Here is a brief description from our discussion leader for the month: "Teenage friendships can shape our ideas about ourselves and the people we become. Tsukuru Tazaki is lucky enough to be part of a tight-knit group with four harmonious friends (two boys and two girls) and basks in their affection and acceptance. But, shortly after he goes away to college, all four of his close friends suddenly stop communicating with him with no explanation. The rejection hurts Tazaki deeply and weighs heavily on him through his college years. In his rather "colorless" adulthood, Tazaki's girlfriend convinces him he must understand his rejection in order to move on and be emotionally whole. So Tazaki embarks on a long and intriguing quest for understanding. Murakami grapples with the idea that others define who we are. That anyone can be destined to be unremarkable, empty, dull, and 'colorless.' That anyone is fated to always be alone. But as in all of his novels, Murakami can put you in different places and make you think." Our meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 9:30 am in the RCN Room #3, and someone volunteers to lead the discussion about the book we have chosen for the month. The dinner included lasagna, eggplant parmesan, meatballs, creamy pasta, salad, garlic bread and dessert. The dinner was great and our members enjoyed the many choices that were available to them. Thank you to Barbara Dipoma and the Steering Committee for providing a wonderful holiday feast. During the evening there was a planned gift exchange for our members with a $20 limit on the gifts. The exchange was a lot of fun, and the evening was a wonderful closeout to 2022. Activities for 2023 are being planned so come to our club meetings which will be at The Courts on the second Thursday of each month. Our next meeting is Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023 at 5:30 pm; mark the date on your calendar.
