46 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JANUARY 2023 | We wish the entire Sun Lakes community, residents and staff, a happy new year! Already, the Garden Club has a lot planned for the year, but before we preview the coming year, we'd like to review a few highlights of 2022. The Garden Club's membership can claim responsibility for providing the Sun Lakes community with four comfortable new benches. Our members contributed enough money to the Penny Pines program to provide for restoring 21 acres of damaged forest within our local national forests. Our generous members also donated two pick-up trucks full of items to supply the "store" for the Banning Senior Center's Children's Christmas Shopping Event. All-in-all, a productive year. Now to preview the new year: at our Jan. 11 meeting, our very own Linda Vieira will treat us to a PowerPoint tour of some of the most "Beautiful Gardens of the World." Linda is a published author of several books, and she writes for the Garden Club in Sun Lakes Life as well as for many other clubs and groups in both Sun Lakes Life and Sun Lakes Lifestyles publications. In February, Becky Levers will talk to us about California Natives. Robert Ruseckas has promised to come back (remember his terrific talk last year on hummingbirds?). His topic this year will be flowers (date to be determined). This summer, Diane Fonseca from the Iris Society will offer some insights on — what else? — irises of course. And we are expecting to have someone from the Bonsai Society come and speak. These are just a few. There are several other topics that are in the works. It promises to be a full and informative year. However, there is more to us than interesting and informative talks. Our membership enjoys the friendly social aspects of our club as well. At every meeting we take a break for chatting, coffee, tea, and oh-so-yummy treats from Bob the Baker. Guests are always welcome to attend one of our meetings which are on the second Wednesday of every month at 10 am in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom (unless otherwise announced). Dues are only $15 a year. Our President Beverly Agner at (951) 306-7379 is always ready to answer your questions, but if you have questions about joining, our membership Co-Chairs Sherry Case at (951) 533-3584 and Linda Powers at (951) 769-3101 would be happy to help. Garden Club Cruzin' Cronies will be dark in January, but will reconvene on Feb. 4. We are a Classic Car Club, but you don't need to own a classic car to join. We get together on the first Saturday of each month under the trees at the edge of the Main Clubhouse parking lot to display and schmooze about our cars, talk about upcoming car shows and related events, and then go to breakfast. There are no dues, no extra fees, just friendship, stories, and laughter. Come join us. Call Denny Rugenstein for more information at (951) 797-0315.
