| THE COLONY NEWS | FEBRUARY 2023 | 27 | THE COLONY NEWS | FEBRUARY 2023 | 27 We will be having our first workshop of the year with award- winning artist and instructor Betty Pilley on Thursday, Feb. 23, from 9 am to 12:30 pm in the Annex. It is for those with at least intermediate painting skills. A materials list and pattern will be provided upon payment of $30. The class is limited, so you may wish to call me to reserve your space. We hope to have Susan Keith back as a guest instructor/artist this year, as well as having new instructors for other later workshops. As all of you know who have attended previous workshops, they are fun and quite educational. I want to welcome new people and first-time watercolor painters to our regular classes, with the next one in March. These offer something for everyone, for those just beginning to the more advanced. As you develop your skills, we hope to see you in our future workshops. Keep painting! We invite you to join us every first Thursday, from 9:30 am to 2 pm in the Annex, for four and a half hours of quality sewing time, show and tell and camaraderie. Bring your own machine and notions, and a current project or some handwork. (Chocolate is always an option.) You can finish a UFO or start something new and work individually at your own pace. We occasionally work on a group project, but that is up to you. We also have a supply of donated fabric you may use for charitable projects, if you wish. If you have questions or a problem, bring it to the workshop. Problem solving is a shared learning experience for everyone. Lunch is potluck, which is optional. Bring a dish to share and your own beverage. There is ice water in the classroom, and coffee is available in the Atrium. New quilters, if you know how to operate your machine and have basic sewing skills, you are encouraged to join us. Watercolor Classes By Sylvia Maxwell, 818-667-1766 Quilters Workshop By Mary Dettmers, 951-698-3171 Our artist for February is oil painter Sunny Hilliker, who has returned to exhibit in our Clubhouse lobby for the second time. Sunny grew up in rural Minnesota, developing a respect and appreciation for nature at an early age. Near the end of her accounting career, she took up oil painting and discovered a new way of seeing the world. Sunny received an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts from Crown College in MN in 1975. Later, she studied art at Colorado State University and San Diego Mesa College. She continues her training through numerous workshops taught by master artists. She has exhibited with the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League as well as the San Diego County Fair and the San Diego Art Institute. Sunny is an associate artist member of the California Art Club and active in the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. Sunny enjoys painting in Southern California outdoors, as well as studio sessions. She and her husband recently relocated to Murrieta after residing in San Diego for 20 years. Last year Sunny continued to exhibit in national shows, in addition to having weekly painting sessions with Laguna Beach friends and meeting with her Laguna Beach Plein Air group. Thank you, Sunny, for sharing your beautiful artwork for our enjoyment. Artist of the Month By Sylvia Maxwell, 818-667-1766 The Colony's Tai Chi class welcomes interested and curious residents to join us every Tuesday and Thursday in the Auditorium. If you have always wanted to try it, now is your chance. Class starts promptly at 3:30 pm for one hour. There is no need to sign up; just come and participate. Please wear loose clothing and supportive shoes. Tai Chi By Jan Prytz, 951-600-4618 If you want to try something new, how about clogging? Classes started Tuesday, January 3, in the Auditorium. The Beginners classes continue from 4:30 to 5:15 pm and Intermediates from 5:15 to 6 pm. The first class is FREE so you can try before you buy, otherwise it is $5 per class with a great instructor. You just need soft leather-bottomed shoes, or the instructor will loan clogging shoes until you buy your own. Clogging is a form of American Folk Dance with taps on the shoes. It's FUN and a way to exercise your body and brain. Studies show that dancing is a major tool in the fight against Alzheimer's and dementia. If you're interested, please call me at the above number.
