Generally it's a sense of health and vitality that arises from your thoughts, emotions, actions and experiences. When we have well-being, we feel happy, healthy, and socially connected. We can improve our well-being by building a certain set of skills. Keep in mind, it takes time and effort to build any new skill. But building your well-being is well worth it because there is nothing more valuable than living a satisfying and meaningful life. Because the meaning of well-being is so broad, let's explore the different aspects of it. Emotional Well-Being: To develop our emotional well- being, we need to build skills like positive thinking, resilience, and mindfulness. These skills enable us to cope with stress, regulate our emotions in the face of challenges, and quickly recover from upsets to continue pursuing our goals and go about our lives. When we have developed our emotional well-being, we feel happier. Physical Well-Being: To develop our physical well-being, we need to increase our understanding of diet, nutrition, and exercise so that we can implement healthy strategies in our daily lives. Our insights help us to eat healthfully. Unfortunately, it's possible to eat healthy and still be unhealthy. For instance, we can accidentally miss important foods or nutrients. Or, we can over burden ourselves with toxins from plastic or processed food. As a result, we may need to eat additional foods, detox our bodies, or prevent these toxins from entering or bodies again. We know we need to stretch and strengthen our bodies to keep fluidity in the muscles and joints. In fact, one review including 23,407 adults over the age of 60 showed a 34 percent reduction in falls among those who participated in a well-rounded exercise program that included balance exercises and resistance and functional training. What's more, strength training can help correct muscular imbalances. Having a stronger core, hamstrings, and glutes takes the load off of your lower back during lifting decreasing your risk of lower-back injuries. Social / Emotional Well-Being: To develop our social well-being, we need to build our social skills – skills such as gratitude, kindness, and communication. These skills lead others to value their interactions with us, helping us to feel less lonely, insecure, or disconnected. It's important to know that building social well-being goes hand in hand with building emotional well-being. Luckily, there are several ways to get socially connected at SDV. Because you are reading The View right now, you can find various options for involvement in physical activities, social events, committees, clubs and groups to join. If you are a bit timid to get involved, you may just want to sit in the lobby and read the paper or have some coffee. I'm pretty sure someone will come by to say hello.
