60 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2023 We are now on our way into the New Year of 2023. January has brought us lots of rain and a beautiful view of the snow-covered mountains. What's in store for us for February? We continue to play shuffleboard on Monday and Saturday mornings at 9 am, unless the courts are wet. As you can see in my photo, during January, with the leaves falling from the trees, the drains for the shuffleboard courts got blocked up and the gutters became flooded. Luckily, pretty much all of the leaves are off the trees now, so hopefully we won't get any more flooding. By now, I hope that everyone has had a chance to see the new courts at The Lodge. They are located behind the swimming pool and next to the paddle tennis courts, where the old horseshoe pits used to be. This is a nice, isolated, and quiet area, except for the noise that we make during our intense competitions. If you are looking for a little exercise and fresh air, this activity could be just what you are looking for. Shuffleboard is an easy game to learn and one can become proficient at playing this game fairly quickly. Our games usually last about 60 to 90 minutes. We choose up different teams each time we play, which allows us to keep the competition challenging and the games interesting. We play for fun, but, of course, everyone likes to win. We have a great group of residents who play regularly and we are always happy to have a new player join our shuffleboard family. So after your morning coffee and/or breakfast, come out and join us. Again, get some fresh air, a little exercise, and some socializing with other residents. We are looking for more new players, so if anyone is interested and has questions or concerns, please contact me by my cell phone or email. Otherwise, please just show up and we will give you an introduction to an easy game to play. See everyone on Monday and Saturday mornings at 9 am. ~ Marty Rotman, (310) 948-1693, mrtmj@aol.com Shuffleboard Testimonial from Dr. Jerry L. Turner, club member: Thanks for organizing this club. It has greatly improved my life. Here are a few ways: 1. Physical activity: Water volleyball is a form of exercise that can help you stay active and fit. It can help you burn calories, improve your cardiovascular endurance, and strengthen your muscles. 2. Stress relief: Exercise in general is a great way to reduce stress and improve your mental health. Playing water volleyball can provide a fun and enjoyable outlet for stress, allowing you to relax and de-stress after a busy day. 3. Social interaction: Water volleyball is typically played in a group setting, which can provide an opportunity for social interaction and connection with others. This can be particularly beneficial if you are an introverted person or if you have difficulty making friends. 4. Improved coordination and balance: Water volleyball requires coordination and balance, as you are moving in the water and trying to hit the ball with your hands or feet. As you play, you may find that your coordination and balance improve, which can translate to other physical activities as well. ~ Mel Harkin, odeegos@yahoo.com Water Volleyball Club
