30 | OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2023 | Woodchucks By the time you read this, we have all had time to make and break our New Year's resolutions! One resolution that I hope you'll keep is to join/support our Woodchucks Woodworking Club. If you didn't get a chance to join at Do Dues Day, you can still take advantage of our well- equipped woodworking shop, and maybe even join in the toy building fun. The children of Camp Pendleton will never forget the hand-built toys, gift cards, and holiday presents we are privileged to donate to Camp Pendleton every year. To join our club, simply bring your check for $10 to the Clubhouse front desk. They will have a membership form to fill out. All new members who want access to the shop are required to watch a safety video, take a guided tour of the shop, and sign a liability waiver. Of course, if you only wish to join to support our efforts, all that is needed from you is the membership form and check. This month we would like to showcase the works of one of our many Master Toy Builders. Robert "Murph" Haugen has been building toys for years, as well as all sorts of wooden creations including a scale model 'working' Jeep engine, Pokémon ball, and dozens more interesting contraptions. Last year he perfected his process for making jigsaw puzzles of varied images, from Disney characters to dinosaurs. After the image has been glued to a thin piece of wood, he transfers the squiggly lines we are all familiar with to the wood and painstakingly cuts out each piece of the puzzle. This is then enclosed in a hand-built frame for a professional-looking piece of art. These puzzles are enjoyed by 'kids' of all ages — from toddlers to aging seniors. Hats off to Murph!
